Dems in House to Pass Resolution Defending Gaza War
Dems in House to Pass Resolution Defending Gaza War

The good news is that J Street is opposed to it.

The bad news is that the 800 pound gorilla, AIPAC, and its satellite organizations are pushing it hard.

The House resolution, which will pass on Tuesday, basically endorses everything Israel did in the horrific Gaza war while bashing Judge Richard Goldstone for documenting war crimes committed in that war (320 dead Palestinian kids!).

After the vote I'll post the roll call and you will see that some of your favorite "courageous" liberals are none too courageous when it comes to this issue. Some of the very House members who denounce the Iraq war, the Afghanistan war and God knows how many other US military actions (often rightly) go mute when it comes to Israel. In fact, most of them do. In other words, they are courageous when there is no cost for it.

Passing this resolution will damage US security by stating to the world that when Bibi asks us to jump, we jump even higher. (Note to Congress: Did you ever consider just saying you don't agree with Goldstone's findings or did AIPAC reject that approach?)

2. That is just wrong.
Period. There is no justification for the force used in the Gaza war, and I'm disappointed that the administration would give Israel a blanket pardon.

4. J Street PAC
http://www.jstreetpac.org/pac/about_the_pac

JStreetPAC is the first and only federal Political Action Committee established to explicitly promote meaningful American leadership to end the Israeli-Palestinian and Israeli-Arab conflicts peacefully and diplomatically.

The PAC's goal is to demonstrate that there is meaningful political and financial support available to candidates for federal office from large numbers of Americans who believe a new direction in American policy will advance U.S. interests in the Middle East and promote real peace and security for Israel and the region.

In 2008, the PAC endorsed 41 candidates for the Senate and House and raised over $578,000 to help them win. Click here to learn about the candidates we endorsed.

Individual contributors directly contribute to endorsed candidates through the PAC, thereby making an important political statement about the motivation for their support. JStreetPAC solicits contributions to candidates both online and off.

The PAC's Finance Committee recruits major donors who can make and raise larger contributions to candidates. The PAC's online fundraising campaign mobilizes large numbers of smaller donors to contribute to endorsed candidates.

JStreetPAC is a non-partisan Political Action Committee which endorses and provides financial support for the election of candidates who support our views related to Israeli security and peace in the Middle East (JStreetPAC’s principles and policy positions can be found at www.jstreet.org/issues).

13. America, stop sucking up to Israel
Barack Obama has been busy - offering the Jewish People blessings for Rosh Hashanah, and recording a flattering video for the President's Conference in Jerusalem and another for Yitzhak Rabin's memorial rally. Only Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah surpasses him in terms of sheer output of recorded remarks.

In all the videos, Obama heaps sticky-sweet praise on Israel, even though he has spent nearly a year fruitlessly lobbying for Israel to be so kind as to do something, anything - even just a temporary freeze on settlement building - to advance the peace process.

The president's Mideast envoy, George Mitchell, has also been busy, shuttling between a funeral (for IDF soldier Asaf Ramon, the son of Israel's first astronaut Ilan Ramon) and a memorial (for Rabin, though it was postponed until next week due to rain), in order to find favor with Israelis. Polls have shown that Obama is increasingly unpopular here, with an approval rating of only 6 to 10 percent.

He decided to address Israelis by video, but a persuasive speech won't persuade anyone to end the occupation. He simply should have told the Israeli people the truth. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who arrived here last night, will certainly express similar sentiments: "commitment to Israel's security," "strategic alliance," "the need for peace," and so on .

15. Apparently there is a HUGE anti-America clique here at DU
How many in this forum have denounced US military action (invasion of Iraq, for instance) and have characterized some of those actions as war crimes?

Might it just be possible that many of us who protested that war actually love our country and want to make it better?

If so, then I submit to you that judging whether or not something is a war crime is not predicated on being for or against the country in question.

Personally, I want security and peace for the nation of Israel and the Jewish people who live there. However, I think their military actions against civilian populations and their continued building of settlements will achieve neither.

9. If the resolution states that rocket attacks launched from Gaza were the cause of the war,
I believe that to be true.

Either Israel is a refuge for Jews or it isn't. If you shoot rockets into a refuge which provokes retaliation which kills innocent people, whose side am I supposed to be on?
