Wal-Mart best symbolizes America, a new poll finds
Source: Associated Press

>>>>NEW YORK – Half the respondents of a new poll say taxing the richest Americans by at least 50 percent is a great idea, while more than a third consider Twitter a fad that will likely fade.
Those are among the findings of a new "60 Minutes"-Vanity Fair Poll released Sunday.

Nearly half of the respondents chose Wal-Mart as the institution that best symbolizes America today, leaving in the dust runners-up Google, Microsoft, the NFL, and the banking and securities firm Goldman Sachs.

Dining out was chosen most often by respondents as a luxury they hate sacrificing in these tough economic times. And 5 percent thought the best way to fight obesity among patrons of fast-food chains is to equip each restaurant with scales for them to weigh themselves.

A politician taking bribes is considered by far the greater sin (chosen by 37 percent of the respondents) when stacked against extramarital affairs (just 2 percent).>>>>

1. that's crazy. I just watched a cable show about Walmart - how the factorie in China spit out that
crap for America - with the factories outwitting the Wal Mart "audits" of working conditions

3. Yeah, I'd be interested to know what percentage of the poll's respondents
who answered Wal-Mart on that question see Wal-Mart in a positive vs. negative light. Of the available options on the "What entity best represents America?" question I would probably have chosen Wal-Mart, despite having a largely negative opinion of the corporation and its impact.

5. Exactly. I'd say Walmart too.. Cheap workers producing mass crap to sell to
sheeples in a box store.. with Walmart employees making min. wage and the greedy family sitting on an empire and busting unions. I would say Walmart represents America.. but its not a positive thing.

11. My first thought as well...Walmart perfectly represents the crappy
wages, shitty working conditions, union busting, money-grubbing, assholiness that exemplifies this country at this time. And that's not a good thing.

10. Sam Walton.......
was a great contributing factor in the destruction of this country's manufacturing base. When I see these TV programs lately that attempt to lionize that son-of-a-bitch I want to vomit. :puke:

The entire Walton family represents everything that I despise about unfettered capitalism and it's crushing effect on small town America.

It's a sad commentary on our times when Wal-Mart, which had everything to do with the destruction of the American Dream, is chosen as it's leading symbol. :banghead:

20. The rest of the data seems to imply that 'best symbolizes' is not a
positive at all. Men I'd change places with- Clooney, Obama, Sprinsteen. Women- Michelle, Hillary, Angelina Jolie and Beyonce.
These are not the choices of those who see Walmart as a lovely symbol of America.

23. Sure it does -- made in China for cheap, short-term personal gain in favor of long-term collective
loss, and the belief that putting a flag and a cozy commercial on anything will make it all better.
