Where's My (Bleeping) Sex? Who wants a DVD player that automatically
Who wants a DVD player that automatically deletes all the juicy bits of movies? One guess

By Mark Morford, SF Gate Columnist

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Because what the world really needs now is more uptight little companies from Utah that will help us all block out the random messy naked blood n' guts of the world.

Companies that will, without anyone asking them to, protect us from media evildoers and exposed flesh and scary exploding things and that part in "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" wherein the universe is blessed, for the briefest of moments, with the joy of Kate Winslet's radiant nipples.

This is what is happening. This is the happy godlike agenda of Utah's ClearPlay, a twee and shrill little corporation that has taken it upon itself to sit around the cube farm all day and watch countless Hollywood flicks and zap out any and all icky violent suggestive material in, say, "Lost In Translation." For your protection. How kind.

1. wan't there some issues involved in this about getting premission from
studios and directors? ie. the directors did not want this going on but the studio says it's ok?

2. Directors are pissed
They don't want anyone fucking with their artwork, and rightfully so. When you start deleting scenes, you change the entire piece. No one has the right to do this and if you don't want to watch nudity or violence, don't get the fucking movie. It's that simple.

4. One problem with that
Even G rated movies have scenes of nudity and violence.

Do you support a woman's right to choose?

What's wrong with giving families a choice?

Don't like the player? Don't buy one. It's that simple.

Making mountains out of mole hills.

6. Name one G rated movie with nudity
And also tell me that this isn't labeled clearly in the movie's rating and I'll have a smidge of sympathy.

It's one thing to censor network television, as everyone in the world has free and readily available access to it. I accept and support that. It's another thing censoring movies that you actively had to go out of your way to purchase and/or rent. That was YOUR choice to view it. If you are unsure as to whether or not something is appropriate for your child, do the adult thing - take a little responsibility and view it ahead of time. Don't want to put in the effort or are still unsure? Don't watch at all. It's that simple.

However, the issue is not about me buying or not buying the player. It's about tampering with someone's life work. This is THEIR piece of art, not ours. We have absolutely no right to tarnish their creation. If you don't like their art as they present it, you are the one who can feel free not to buy it. No one is forcing you to watch anything you don't want to.

7. A majority of directors don't own the rights to their work
Edited on Fri Apr-23-04 11:00 AM by Tempest
They know this when they sign the contract for the pictures.

For right or wrong, that's the nature of the beast.

On Edit:

And because of this, the "arts" and "creation" issue is a strawman.

Also, "Rugrats in Paris" had partial nudity in it.

8. So what if studios own the rights?
This DVD player isn't being produced by the studios. It's being produced by a private firm. I don't see how this has anything to do with altering someone's intellectual property for profit without consent.

Granted, I haven't seen Rugrats in Paris, but if people are in a tizzy about partial animated nudity, I truly don't have any pity for them. Try to let your kid live outside the bubble.

9. Strawmen and Denial
You made the statement directors were upset. I pointed out the issue was a strawman in regards to the DVD players (which is the subject of this thread) and studios allowing movies to be edited.

You asked me to name one G rated movie with violence or nudity, I complied. Then you go off on some tangent about people in a tizzy and to try to let my kid live outside a bubble.

Seems some people can't deal with having facts pointed out to them.

10. Laughable
You think you can just sidestep the argument with a pointless "strawman" claim? And you call that a fact?

And no, there was no nudity in Rugrats. You saw some child's animated butt and a sumo wrestler. That's why I went on a tangent - because you reasoning for needing this device is absurd, and more legally speaking, not a compelling enough public interest to justify altering someone else's intellectual property for a profit. Studios allowing "clean" remakes of someone's work is one thing. Taking the option completely out of EVERYONE who has intellectual property interests by creating a machine that automatically censors is a clear case of someone trying to profit off of tainting someone else's creativity. THAT is the thread - it is not about authorized re-makes of the DVDs as you seem to keep trying to push.

3. What's the problem?
It's not like this will be shoved down our throats.

Don't want the DVD player? Don't buy one.
