Jesus plus nothing:
Undercover among America's secret theocrats
By Jeffrey Sharlet

And a man's foes shall be they of his own household.
—Matthew 10:36

This is how they pray: a dozen clear-eyed, smooth-skinned “brothers” gathered together in a huddle, arms crossing arms over shoulders like the weave of a cable, leaning in on one another and swaying like the long grass up the hill from the house they share. The house is a handsome, gray, two-story colonial that smells of new carpet and Pine-Sol and aftershave; the men who live there call it Ivanwald. At the end of a tree-lined cul-de-sac, quiet but for the buzz of lawn mowers and kids playing foxes-and-hounds in the park across the road, Ivanwald sits as one house among many, clustered together like mushrooms, all devoted, like these men, to the service of Jesus Christ. The men tend every tulip in the cul-de-sac, trim every magnolia, seal every driveway smooth and black as boot leather. And they pray, assembled at the dining table or on their lawn or in the hallway or in the bunk room or on the basketball court, each man's head bowed in humility and swollen with pride (secretly, he thinks) at being counted among such a fine corps for Christ, among men to whom he will open his heart and whom he will remember when he returns to the world not born-again but remade, no longer an individual but part of the Lord's revolution, his will transformed into a weapon for what the young men call “spiritual war.”

“Jeff, will you lead us in prayer?”

Surely, brother. It is April 2002, and I have lived with these men for weeks now, not as a Christian—a term they deride as too narrow for the world they are building in Christ's honor—but as a “believer.” I have shared the brothers' meals and their work and their games. I have been numbered among them and have been given a part in their ministry. I have wrestled with them and showered with them and listened to their stories: I know which man resents his father's fortune and which man succumbed to the flesh of a woman not once but twice and which man dances so well he is afraid of being taken for a fag. I know what it means to be a “brother,” which is to say that I know what it means to be a soldier in the army of God.

“Heavenly Father,” I begin. Then, “O Lord,” but I worry that this doesn't sound intimate enough. I settle on, “Dear Jesus.” “Dear Jesus, just, please, Jesus, let us fight for Your name.”

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ivanwald, which sits at the end of Twenty-fourth Street North in Arlington, Virginia, is known only to its residents and to the members and friends of the organization that sponsors it, a group of believers who refer to themselves as “the Family.” The Family is, in its own words, an “invisible” association, though its membership has always consisted mostly of public men. Senators Don Nickles (R., Okla.), Charles Grassley (R., Iowa), Pete Domenici (R., N.Mex.), John Ensign (R., Nev.), James Inhofe (R., Okla.), Bill Nelson (D., Fla.), and Conrad Burns (R., Mont.) are referred to as “members,” as are Representatives Jim DeMint (R., S.C.), Frank Wolf (R., Va.), Joseph Pitts (R., Pa.), Zach Wamp (R., Tenn.), and Bart Stupak (D., Mich.). Regular prayer groups have met in the Pentagon and at the Department of Defense, and the Family has traditionally fostered strong ties with businessmen in the oil and aerospace industries. The Family maintains a closely guarded database of its associates, but it issues no cards, collects no official dues. Members are asked not to speak about the group or its activities.

much more.......

17. Check out alibris.com -
it's my very favorite book site - especially for out-of-print books and obscure titles - they're absolutely wonderful to deal with - I've bought from them for lots of years, and I've never had anything but exemplary service. And their prices are excellent.

If you decide to try them, use this - POLITICS - as the Redeemable Code - it's good for $1.00 off the whole price. That's how I got this book - brand new hardcover with a small remainder mark on the pages' edge - for under ten bucks, shipping included.

Again, thanks..................

2. I heard about this on Rachel
She interviewed Sharlet, it was amazing what he found out about this group, and their goals! I couldn't believe what he was saying! How can a group like this exist, and yet nothing about it is every mentioned in the media?

Why someone would not recommend this thread, but instead "unrecommend" is beyond me, but when I recommended it, it went from <0 to 0. This should be on the main page and everyone in the country needs to know about this group, although I am sure that many republicans would defend it no matter what!

7. Yes, I have been seeing all over tonight
I think the "unrecommend" feature is being abused big time by trouble makers and right wing trolls! It's really a shame if you ask me that good posts are being attacked by these people!

4. I been commenting on their frame of mind for years.
They believe they are chosen and blessed to lead. And in that they can make the decision that they can do anything to maintain that ability to lead. Since they think it is some God decision that they should lead. Every religion has groups that think they are better then other people, and if you look at those groups, most do not do very many good things. Those that think they are better, or more blessed, can be seen in most terrible societies and injustices. It is almost the opposite of love your neighbor as yourself to claim to be better then your neighbor.

So suddenly they can become oppressive to keep themselves claim to governmental or monetary power. Ends justify means not for the good of society, but to keep their control, since they think their control is for the best of society.

But then they think they are better and drift into ideas of two different societies, and use all kinds of doctrines to defend a slave class and a master class. When actually they do it for their own reasons.

People been deceived by that for years, and it never ends well, they make the decision that they are chosen not to help others but because it makes them feel special and rationalizes their wealth or claim to power.

However many may be good people, it is not fair to make blanket stereotypes, but for the most part when people think they are chosen or special, it usually messes up their ego and gets bad for them and others. It also allows for not having empathy for many other people.

I think democracy or rule by many is better, and would not want to be someone that believes some are better and deserve more, and some are worse and deserve bad things. Since at some point they will not be 'the best' and at that point their rules would be bad for them.

You can actually make a pretty good explanasion of the difference of what hevean and hell could be from comparing, 'love your neigbor as yourself' verses 'think of yourself better then your neighbor.'

6. I believe there are members of 'The Family' that frequent DU and
attempt to sabotage posts. They attempt to fit in to any situation. I have not like Billy Graham since I heard about a man in South Carolina that gave his life savings of $50,000 to Graham. His son tried to get it back because his father had Alzheimer's at the time and didn't know what he was doing. He needed the money for support and medical bills, The Graham organization would not give it back.

REALLY scary stuff!!!
Dominionism is another one of those groups looking to unite church and state.

Christian Reconstructionism is up there too.

The thought that there are people INSIDE our government who subscribe to these fanatical beliefs
is sickening. They are in the government only to destroy it from the inside.

19. Abraham Vereide
Incidents in the Life of a Modern Viking . . .

Broadening Horizons

By NORMAN GRUBB

The first great turning point in Abram’s (Abraham Vereide) life had been his emigration to America. The second was the experience gained through the Christian ministry, in the practical application of the dominating passion of his life—to bring Christ to men and men to Christ. The third, yet to come, was the channeling of this redemptive stream.

After nine years as superintendent of the Good Will Industries in Seattle, Abram was invited to Boston in 1931 to be associate general superintendent of the Good Will Industries of America, as well as pastor of the English Department of the Church of All Nations, and executive secretary for Good Will Industries for New England, positions he held till 1934.
.
.
.
The turning point came when Franklin D. Roosevelt, then governor of New York State, invited him to a conference concerning a social relief program for that state. “He wanted me to take charge of a state program,” wrote Abram “and apply this principle of the Good Will Industries in the expenditure of a fund of eighteen million dollars for the state. This I didn’t do, as the religious phases could not be included; but he also emphasized that what the state needed more than anything else was a spiritual upsurge. He called James Farrell, president of the United States Steel Corporation, and arranged for a few men to discuss the needs of the state in the field that was then my specialty. That meeting became a turning point in my work.

Headed for Chaos

“Mr Farrell reviewed the history of America and pointed out that we have had nineteen depressions—five major ones—and that every one was caused by disobedience to divine laws, neglect of God, the Church and the spiritual life, and that what had given rise to economic prosperity and social welfare was the quickening of the religious life. ‘Now,’ said he, ‘I am a Roman Catholic and we don’t go in much for revivals and such things, but I am as sure as I am sitting here that if we don’t get a thorough revival of genuine religion, with confession of our sins and repentance toward God by high and low, and a return for prayer and the Bible, we are headed for chaos. It must come through laymen, and the leaders of industry and business must lead.’”
.

"Mr Farrell (president of U.S. Steel) reviewed the history of America and pointed out that we have had nineteen depressions—five major ones—and that every one was caused by disobedience to divine laws, neglect of God, the Church and the spiritual life, and that...........................". (Corporate pirates like Mr. Farrell had NOTHING to do with those depressions, so STOP saying that!)
