SC Governor Mark Sanford admits to having extra-marital affair
Excerpt:

There has been a great deal of mystery surrounding South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford's disappearance. Last Tuesday, the South Carolina legislature ended and two days later, Sanford had gone missing.

Sanford's wife didn't know where he was and his office staff reported that they thought he was hiking the Appalachian Trail.

Today, in a surprising turn of events, Governor Sanford held a new conference after returning to the United States from Argentina. The governor told reporters on live television today that he had been in Argentina and apologized to his staff, his wife, his children and the citizens of the state of South Carolina for his actions before finally revealing that he had been having an affair with a "dear dear friend" from Argentina who he has been friends with for eight years.

2. the news conference was bizarre
I am uploading the video to Youtube but it's going slow and will probably take another hour.

Sanford started out babbling about the Appalachian trail and educational trips he had taken as a child. He stammered a lot. It didn't seem to be going anywhere. Then suddenly he started apologizing to his wife, his children, his in-laws, his friends, his office staff and the state of South Carolina without explaining why. He only got tears in his eyes when he started talking about his best friend who had come up to stay with his wife during this "time." He talked about his friend and how his friend had been with him in his early campaigns and had had to sleep in his basement on Jurassic Park sheets.

Then suddenly, without any warning, he said that ultimately the bottom line in all of this is that he had been having an affair with a "dear dear friend." Apparently he's known the woman for 8 years but only since last year has been sleeping with her.

He wept and apologized a lot and it was uncomfortable to watch. He said he would resign as chairman of the GOP governor's association but when a reporter asked if he would resign the governorship of SC he didn't asnwer.

He is getting a lot of sympathy because he "manned up" over this but his political career is essentially over at this point.

Even though I give him credit for coming before cameras and spilling the dirty truth, the fact remains that he left the country without telling his staff, his wife or anyone else where he was going. This is a problem for a politician. The state was without a leader for a week. I think he should resign as governor and let someone govern who isn't so emotional. If he had just told people he was going to Argentina for a week's vacation, this wouldn't even be in question. Frankly, I don't care that he had an affair, but I care that he can't govern properly because of it. And of course there is the whole idea of the GOP being the "party of family values" which is of course pure BS.

3. Wow.
Thanks for the post--even the recap sounds creepy.

And another Republican bites the dust...It's unbelievable how these sanctimonious hypocrites keep "dipping their wicks" and then getting caught! It's hilarious and pathetic at the same time.

:nopity:

Diane

Anishnabe and proud!

4. It's almost ready...the video I mean
I don't know why Youtube is running so slow today.

The video is downright bizarre really.

It takes all the fun out of bashing the GOP when they do it to themselves.

"Hilarious and pathetic" is a great way to describe it, Diane.
