Fitzgerald stressed the importance of public service and told the 294 students to stand up against corruption in any form they might encounter during their lives.
"If any of you are thinking the way I was, that public service is only sacrifice, it's not," he said. "It's a luxury to be able to do what you like to do."
On Blago: He declined to answer any direct questions about Blagojevich during a meeting after the speech, only alluding to political corruption in general during his address to the crowd.
"People need to stand up and be counted when they see corruption around them," Fitzgerald said. "What we need is a cultural change."
Campus divided when Fitzgerald was chosen as speaker:Obama gave the address at Knox in 2005 when he was a U.S. senator. Comedian and political satirist Stephen Colbert did the same in 2006. Former President Bill Clinton wowed a crowd of thousands in 2007, and former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright gave the address in 2008.
"I think we're a little disappointed after Stephen Colbert and Barack Obama and everybody," graduate Rebecca King said. "We've had that kind of buildup over the last five years. We were expecting someone of that caliber."
