Excerpt:On Sunday, NBC's "Meet the Press" host David Gregory interviewed Senator Arlen Specter (D), Pennsylvania (see video below). One of the most intriguing questions Gregory asked Specter was, "What is the future of the Republican party?"
Senator Specter expressed hope that there will be a "wake up call." Specter reminded Gregory that he had worked for a strong two party system for a long time. He also expressed hope that the Republican party will turn away from the "Club for Growth." Specter explained that the Club for Growth financially sponsors conservative candidates in primary elections who cannot win general elections and points to the case of Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island. The Club for Growth supported Chafee's more conservative opponent who won the primary but then lost the general election in a moderate state. Had Chafee won the general election, the GOP would have controlled the Senate in 2007 and 2008 and would have confirmed 34 Republican judges.
Later in the hour, David Gregory spoke with Joe Scarborough about the problems the Republican party faces today. Scarborough explained what is wrong with the party today.
"When Republican took over Washington, and we're not just talking about George W. Bush. We're talking about Republican congress. When Republicans took over congress in 2001 and the White House, we owned Washington, D.C. like Democrats do now. We had a $155 billion surplus. When Republicans got out of power, we had a $1.5 trillion deficit. We doubled the national debt from about $5.7 trillion to about $11 trillion. Americans believed that we were spending too much money on foreign wars as well."
