Torture Fallout: Release Your Testimony About My Wife, Dick Cheney by Joe Wilson

Torture Fallout: Release Your Testimony About My Wife, Dick Cheney by Joe Wilson

The Daily Beast

Former Vice President Dick Cheney’s reemergence on the political stage after his ignominious departure on Inauguration Day, eschewing the traditional handshake with his successor and the new president, is nothing if not ironic. The most secretive individual in American politics is now calling for the selective release of documents that remain classified in one of his own files marked “Detainees.” We have also learned that a principal reason for having tortured senior al Qaeda detainees was not, in fact, to defend the Homeland, but rather to build the case for war with Iraq based on alleged ties between Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden. Despite literally hundreds of waterboarding sessions, there was no evidence developed that such a link existed. But that did not stop Cheney. He and others in the Bush administration simply asserted a link even though they knew one did not exist.

I know something about Cheney’s disinformation. When I, and a number of others, including a four-star Marine Corps general, Carleton Fulford, and the then-U.S. Ambassador to the West African nation of Niger, reported to the CIA that there was no evidence to support the assertion that Iraq had entered into a contract to purchase 500 tons of uranium yellowcake, our conclusions were ignored by the Bush administration. Instead, the president, in his State of the Union address in 2003, proclaimed a falsehood: “Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa.” Then National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice was trotted out to assert that we could not afford to “wait for the smoking gun to come in the form of a mushroom cloud,” and Cheney himself asserted that Iraq was reconstituting its nuclear-weapons program.

There is no longer any question that we were misled by an administration that had already made the decision to invade, conquer, and occupy Iraq, and did everything it could to force the facts to justify their action. Cheney, the architect of the Bush administration’s disastrous national security and foreign policies, now wants to declassify certain classified documents that he believes will vindicate his advocacy of a war of choice in the Middle East and his support of torture. Cheney asserts that the ends justify the means whatever the insult to international law, the conscience of the world, and damage to the long-term U.S. national-security interests.

snip

The disinformation campaign to manipulate public opinion in favor of the invasion, the torture program, and the illegal exposure of a clandestine CIA agent—my wife, Valerie Plame Wilson—were linked events.

3. Eh, just tellin' the truth. However, if he wanted more eyes on his article...
he should've put "Plame" in the title.

Too many 'Murkins no longer have a clue who "Joe Wilson" is. Then again, if half the morans think that's Joe the Plumber's real name....

10. He really won't. He's got a thing about Joe Wilson.
Although I am sure Cheney feels everyone is his Nemesis, what with his fear jones and all, but Wilson must be way up there on the top of the list.

7. "homeland".......nobody liked(s) that term/usage.
The United States of America....well, that's something ELSE entirely.

Dick Cheney should just shoot himself in the face....instead of him shooting "other people" he calls "friends" (who then APOLOGIZE for being shot in the face by "the Dick") .....that's not a 'friend', that's a scared "suck-up". Wow.....the "Dick" sure scares a lot of "friends" in high places.

The ONLY reason he's not shunned now is b/c he has amassed such ILLEGAL power. And people are AFRAID of his power/influence right now.....but it won't last.

9. Is Joe Wilson expecting that the memos labeled "Detainees"
contain the false statements by tortured suspects regarding nuclear weapons and Iraq? Sounds like it. I'm so pleased to see that Joe Wilson is debunking Cheney's propaganda campaign at the get-go. It's as though Cheney set this whole scenario up. It's intended to inure the American people to the idea that we have to torture in order to be safe, an idea that is, in fact, very dangerous to ordinary Americans as well as false.

Kudos to Mr. Wilson for not letting this go. Fight these bastards to the end, because that is what it is going to take.

12. Torture never was about keeping America safe
Torture was about trying to establish a link between 9-11 and Iraq. It's all they cared about.

If torture really did keep America safe, don't you think they would be releasing the specific information on that? The fact that they have not, and want to keep the actual information secret, is telling: the Bush administration tortured prisoners for political purposes, not to keep America safe.

18. It didn't, it made us less safe....
...Ms. Plame's project was to thwart nuclear proliferation. When it went into goat fuck mode it put the country at risk. Now if we start to connect the dots that may have been Shitstain's intent to begin with.

33. Sorry. I wondered about the same thing, actually.
Was Dick trying to kill two birds with one stone? To injure a critic as well as derail a covert program that provided a clearer picture of nuclear capabilities in the region? Without clear information about those capabilities it would be easier for the Cheney Gang to create the type of "intelligence reports" they needed to accomplish their aims.

It was very sad to learn about what Valerie Plame's organization did. That Dick would smash up such a valuable information source. That demonstrated that he really didn't care for accurate information at all.

The further reports on the early use of harsh interrogation, a.k.a. torture, to get the information he wanted from detainees, are more awful evidence of his reckless determination to force our country into a series of wars.

...to take some small, grim satisfaction in this knowledge...
No matter what he does- no matter how many people he's had killed, tortured, or 'detained'...no matter how much infrared ultra-violet ultra-sonic microwave high-tech surveillance...no matter how many Secret Service, Blackwater or other guards he has surrounding him and his 'undisclosed location...
he will never, ever feel SAFE.

Can't guard against the bad guys and demons that come from inside your mind, Mr Cheney...
no matter how many people you have killed, 'detained' or tortured.

You know how we've been saying 'projection' is a Republican tool? It's also one of their greatest liabilities.
Think that this particular example of 'projection' had a helluva lot to do with how the last eight years have gone down.

:cry::banghead::grr::nuke:

edit for (hopefully) clarity

22. I do wish there was a way to make it illegal for anyone to show that guy's face
Again.

Every time I turn on the TV and see that nasty Cheney mug staring out, I want to reach through the television screen and pluck out his eyes.

Can't we get a law passed making it illegal to show the monster's face? His no longer in office - why the fuck do we have to hear his friggin' opinion about everything?

And the things that matter, like his confessing to 9/11 or what really went on in the seccret energy meetings, those things he stays quiet about.

I want to have his liver with some light Chianti!!

28. What many don't know: Joe and Valerie are (or were!) Republicans
I met them last December. Joe in particular feels he was betrayed by people from his own party.
That has to hurt badly.

Valerie is, by the way, indeed drop-dead gorgeous, and not at all stuck-up--quite the opposite.
They are both very approachable. Smart and down-to-earth. Bad Republicans, both of them!
