Schwarzenegger Opens California Fairgrounds to Homeless Camp

By Michael B. Marois

March 25 (Bloomberg) -- California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger said a make-shift tent city for the homeless that sprang up in the capital city of Sacramento will be shut down and its residents allowed to stay at the state fairgrounds.

Schwarzenegger said he ordered the state facility known as Cal-Expo to be used for three months to serve the 125 tent city residents, some of them displaced by the economic recession. The encampment may be shut down within a month, said Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson. The move comes after the Sacramento City Council last night agreed to spend $880,000 to expand homeless programs.

“Together with the local government and volunteers, we are taking a first step to ensure the people living in tent city have a safe place to stay, with fresh water, healthy conditions and access to the services they need,” Schwarzenegger said in a statement. “And I am committed to working with Mayor Johnson to find a permanent solution for those living in tent city.”

7. My take is 180 degress from everyone elses......(I am from Sac)
Putting homeless people at Cal expo is the single dumbest idea i ahve heard from the leaders in Sacramento since....well their last really stupid idea.(The lap dance ordinance of two days ago)

Cal expo is right in the heart of the business district. theaters, dozens of restaurants, a huge upsaclae mall, office parks are all within a five minute walk of the fairgrounds. All of a sudden 500 homeless people are within a five minute walk along with the areas usual population of homeless.

At Tent city, there were a five minute walk to the services offered them. And in Sac that is a quitea few, all downtown and in an run down industrial section.

And can you imagine when the fair, home shows, RV Slaes of the Century, county fair etc and all the summertime events are taking place at Cal Expo?

The shelter t Cal Expo (the one they run regularly) was very restrictive and everyone hated it. Go there by 5 or shut out (and then a long ways from downtown), no pets, rip-offs, drug and alcohol bans....).

How are they going to get running water and showers to them here? How are they going to deal with the bathroom situation there? liability?

Another knee jerk, do something for the cameras and hope nobody askes you a question, situation.....
