The GOP just "ain't" Republican any more
AMERICAN GOVERNMENT: The GOP just "ain't" Republican any more
Moanin' the Grand Old Party Blues

I've been a registered Republican since the Eisenhower administration --- for those of you too young or too old to recall, that is since the late 1950's --- and yes, I'm old!
The current GOP just "ain't" the same. Over the years it's evolved into something totally different.

The old GOP believed in less government intervention into state affairs and people's lives. Call me a rebel or an independent pioneer or just plain ornery, but I don't want our government to tell us what books we can read, or that our kids need to pray in public school, or that our property can be seized by the government for development purposes.

I'm from "the old school" where if you have damaged your credit and are in debt, you dig down deep and pull yourself out from that debt and get on with your life. To me, a "bail-out" is what you do when your ship is sinking and is NOT a handout from American taxpayers.
Perhaps the GOP needs to make a name change to something more catchy and contemporary in nature to its political platform and philosophy --- say, like maybe the NEO-CONS, which is closer to a NeoConservative Party. After all, when government believes it has a right to tell all of us unequivocally what we can and can't do, that nation goes from a Representative Democratic Republic to a more fascist orientation.

If you don't like that name change idea, how about an exodus by the REAL fiscal and political conservative Republicans within the current GOP to form their own party? They could become the OGOP --- for Older Grand Old Party, which granted may be too redundant on the old slant --- or maybe even the "MCGOP" would be better, for More Conservative GOP.

3. Now that you are so "old"...
you are a member of the government (taxpayer) paid for health insurance and the government (taxpayer) paid for drug plan and social security too.

I think in this economy the old republicans are going to be known as staunch socialists.

4. Prior to about the middle of the Reagan administration
I had a great deal of respect for my friends that were GOP, despite the fact that I disagreed vehemently with most of their agenda. Prior to that time, the party was based on fiscal conservatism and libertarian principles. But once the fundamentalist Christians and the small government de-regulators took over the party, with the MIC piling on, they lost their principles.

Even Richard Nixon, who admittedly started the culture wars and deservedly left in disgrace, had redeeming qualities and pursued some good policy. Since Reagan, however, they have had so much success getting elected by cutting taxes, convincing people (largely through their performance) that government was bad, and selectively advancing "wedge" issues and us-versus-them-and-keep-America-scared politics, that they have evolved into a party of haters.

There was a time when matters of state and judiciary, while nuanced, were largely kept to some extent beyond politics. Beginning with Reagan's administration, everything became politicized and we watched as it all went to hell.

Well, it's a new day and the incoming Obama administration is trying to bring civility back into the debate. If the GOP leaders can wrest control from the divisive forces that took over their party, they can rise again. If Obama falls on his face, however, they will not have to cast out their demons to regain power.

I'm optimistic that Obama will be very successful. And to the extent that he can build a coalition of liberal democrats, moderate republicans and control the moderate middle of the electorate, the people that have steered the GOP for more than two decades will be more and more marginalized.

7. CRIMINALS.
The republican party itself must be investigated by Congress under the RICO act. I am serious.

10. The Republicrat Party
We elected a Republican and a Republicrat in 1980. And the Republican Party became the Republicrat Party. And the Democratic Party has become the Republicrat Party as well. I see it every time I listen to Nancy Pelosi. She served the Emperor and served those who the Emperor served.

The only Democrats and Republicans at this point are the fools who blindly believe there are Democrats and Republicans on the ballot.

And then along came Barack Obama. He is no fool. And he may end up ridding us of this third party. And return us to a two-party system that this time will work together for the American people instead of working against the American people.

I have had doubts about Barack Obama's table but never about Barack Obama and I believe those who don't belong at the table will not remain there. I believe that as he did with Rick Warren he simply wants everyone to see for themselves. And we will. And we will be a better America for it. We will finally be "free at last."

"Lord, in the memory of all the saints who from their labors rest, and in the joy of a new beginning, we ask you to help us work for that day when black will not be asked to get in back, when brown can stick around ... when yellow will be mellow ... when the red man can get ahead, man; and when white will embrace what is right. That all those who do justice and love mercy say Amen."

Joseph Lowery forgot to add "when those who have a different god and those who are gay don't need to be prayed away"

Perhaps when he delivers the invocation for Barack Obama in 2013 he will add it. But by then we will already know it.
