Not since 1974 has America embraced so eagerly a change in the presidency, and that was when Richard Nixon quit rather than be impeached.
George W. Bush is nearly as unpopular now as the disgraced Nixon was then. He is handing off to President-elect Barack Obama a dismal economy, two wars, a mountain of debt, and international enmity for U.S. foreign policy.
Yet, in his farewell address Thursday night, Bush employed familiar blinders in reviewing his catastrophic presidency. He spoke of promoting liberty around the world, lowering income taxes, and providing a new Medicare prescription drug benefit. Of course, his justification for war in Iraq was contrived, and he is leaving the federal government a fiscal wreck.
