We Have Met the Enemy and He is Us

All too often Americans view their government as the enemy. We decry its inefficiency, its corruption, and even doubt its purpose. We have a very strong “we” vs. “them” mentality. Many agree with St. Ronnie of Reagan’s view, “Gummint’s not the solution, it’s the problem.” But that’s a cop out that plainly conflicts with the Preamble to the Constitution, especially coming from a man who swore to protect and defend it.

Note the Preamble specifically says, “We the people” - not “We the Congress”, “He the President”, nor “We AIG“. That three-word phrase gives a simple, yet elegant definition of “the government” and it is us.

Government With a Subscript “g”
About the only consensus in America is that our government is dysfunctional. It does stupid and cockamamie things. It wastes money. And, we the people blame special interests, corporations, greedy officials, or a graft-filled voting process. Many believe government is best spelled with a subscript “g” or maybe no “G” at all.
