March 2004-Black America's long honeymoon with Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice may be nearing an end.

For the three years of the Bush presidency, Powell and, to a lesser degree, Rice have been enshrined in the pantheon of African-American heroes, modern-day Black History Month stalwarts right beside the likes of Frederick Douglass and Sojourner Truth.

Powell is the first black secretary of state in American history, arguably the most powerful black person in the world. And Rice is the second black (after Powell) and first woman to serve as national security adviser to the president.

With their appointments, President Bush guaranteed his place on any time line of African-American history, and Powell and Rice became a source of pride even for many blacks with no love for the Republican administration they serve.

2. Token Blacks
The only real reason Bush (probably at the behest of Rove) appointed Powell and Rice anyway was to pacify the NAACP and the African-American community in general. Neither were particularly enthralled with Bush from the get-go, and far less so after his big little bro Jeb and the Wicked Witch of the South (Katherine Harris) erased the names of thousands of African Americans from Florida's roster of registered voters.

Powell's supposed "integrity" gave many the idea that there would be some sort of balance in this administration, particularly versus the unabashedly racist Dick Cheney and the Darwinian, WASP-superiority complex that remains the modus operandi of the Republican Party. Condi Rice, on the other hand, was never intended to be much more than "window dressing" -- to present to the world a sense (albeit a false sense) of diversity in the GOP and the Bush administration.

3. The Colon and Condi Show
It doesn't get high ratings from anyone except maybe from hard core right wingnuts. These two are an embarasment to America, period. Trotting Condi out is another dumb thing that Bushco does. She is a incompetant liar. It's so obvious that she lies a lot that it's downright awkward to watch her. Colon is a better liar. One has to check for his prior statements to prove his lies.

4. Powell and Rice weren't appointed to pacify anyone ....
Edited on Sun Mar-21-04 08:15 AM by hadrons
they earned their place in the Bush adminstration ... by being corrupt GOP whores who know their place (like their white counterparts there ... save for Big-Time and Dumsfeld who wander off from time to time)

I never had a sense that there was a "honeymoon" for these two in the African-American community, most African-Americans know they're shills and sellouts
