GOP Loonie in Whitley, KY
Daniel Essek is your model Republican. He is suing about Barack Obama’s citizenship, he challenged Mitch McConnell this year int he primaries, and he uses words he’s heard on Hannity, words like “Fachism,” a word I don’t even know. Essek heads the Society for Liberty and Prosperity, and it appears to have two members.

1. Somebody should check if Essek is human, or the offspring of a hillbilly and a farm animal.

5. Hillbilly/Animal fucker P.C. on DU ?
Yes we have fools in Kentucky. Why do you smug bastards enjoy the no teeth hillbilly trite jokes ? Does it make you feel superior ? He is a complete idiot, Attack that, NOT A WHOLE STATE. I love Kentucky We are trying to fix it. I pretty much always vote for the democrats that are running but this independent voter also remembers the democrats controlling this state for generations and robbing it blind. I feel the feds could headquarter their RICCO offices in Frankfort. The only group of people left in the country that it's fine to stereotype and make fun of. Maybe if all the treasure our natural resources produced stayed here people might have enough money to visit a dentist . The farm animal thing is so disgusting I won't comment. I like this site a lot but I have seen way too much of this kind of "humor". We die in your wars.... We mine coal for your electricity...We are tired of this shit....

6. Welcome to DU
and no, it's generally not PC. I've posted a few missives on the use of the term Hillbilly. We real hillbillies find the term used in the pejorative to be extremely offensive. Most folks don't realize that Appalachian people have a long Democratic history and are a lot more open-minded than outsiders give us credit for. We've been easy targets for a couple of centuries.

But stick around. There are lots and lots of good folks here who do get it. Our country's gonna need every hand pulling together for the next few years to clean up the mess that Dumbya and his crew made.

8. Hillbilly as a pejorative
in this environment is criticism of a state of mind, not geographic origins. During the Bush Administration we've been ruled by a hillbilly from New Haven, Connecticut. Sarah Palin is a dern tootin' Alaskan hillbilly.
Just because Mitch McConnell likes to visit Brokeback Mountain doesn't make him a hillbilly.

9. Did I use a perjorative term to describe this guy?
Nope, I generally just think he's a solo idiot, not part of a group of idiots, unless that means Republicans.

11. You didn't.
Your posts are thoughtful and appreciated.

I think the poster was referring to reply #1, which didn't sit entirely well with me either. A lot of folks are entirely too free with the term "hillbilly" implying "trashy", "unwashed", "ignorant", etc. A lot of us Appalachian folk find it equally offensive as the N-bomb.

Racial epithets are not okay. Sexist and homophobic epithets aren't okay. Ethnic epithets aren't okay either. There isn't any defense of using the term hillbilly to mean "trashy", "unwashed", or "ignorant" as poster #8 implies. It's really not cool.

I posted a journal entry last month on the subject and several Appalachian folk spoke up in agreement. Post #1 was out of line and I felt Post #8 was wrong in its defense of the indefensible.

Stingo, it wasn't you. No offense intended toward you.

15. Hey all new(ish) people... read this please...
The comments made about "hillbillies" and "animal fuckers" are massively disrespectful to this community at large. It also stains us as a community as a media forum. So please, knock it off. We don't do that here. That's all.

17. HANNITY' AMERICA sure isn't MY AMERICA !
I still can't understand how Hannity and O'reilly are able to brainwash America. http://www.wisecountyissues.com Appalachia is Third World America. Where's Hannity and O'reilly ? Obama isn't going to bankrupt THE COAL INDUSTRY ! They do that right after they decapitate our mountains, pluck every damned dime and dollar out of us then leave a toxic environmental mess and no one held culpable because they went broke !

19. Hillbilly etc.
Stingo , my reply was not for you my initial response was to #1. Please excuse my mistake I have been visiting this site for a while but not posting. The fellow Daniel Essek could be like me in a way. Looks like he came out of the old KY Fifth which when I graduated HS in 1971 had the lowest graduation rate in the union. It also pretty much voted republican when the rest of the state was so democratic ( before the blue/red crap came along) that very few (almost Nunn) republicans won state office. As John Prine said in his song Voted for Eisenhower cause Lincoln won the war. This hearkens back to the poor public education in Kentucky. Fifteenth state admitted to the union, with a common need still so poorly addressed. Education has not been stressed in the state, money was spent education just wasn't achieved. The money went/ is going to local fiefdoms. Mr. Essek would be preferable to the McConnell creature. The national democratic party should look at the state democratic party and investigate. CROOKED for generations. We will fix Kentucky.

20. I posted this journal about a month ago
and there are more than a few of us Appalachian folks on DU. Those of us who've made it out will tell folks who want to snicker and make fun, about a people who are still oppressed, a shame that shouldn't be happening right here in America. We'll tell them about what amounts to slavery, about opportunities denied by systematic corporate fascism and government indifference, about a M$M that colludes in reinforcing stereotypes to keep an entire group of people down and under control. We'll tell them about crooked GOP minions who strive to keep unions out and pay low. We'll tell them because folks back home can't. We'll tell them about companies coming in with federal blessing to throw people off land where they've been living for 6 or 7 generations, and take an entire mountain down, then poison an entire water table the size of a county. Nobody gives a damn because it's "just a bunch of hillbillies" anyway. We'll tell them that those same families don't get a dime for being turned out of house, home, land, and living, either. We'll tell them about where that mountain used to be, they'll put a private damn golf-course for richfolks where the original tenants of the land could never afford and would never be allowed in to go, gated with McMansions.

The rest of the folks who want to snicker and talk about "hillbillies" are just part of the problem. They don't know what we know and they haven't seen what we've seen.

I hope you'll stick with us and keep posting. That's the only way they'll understand how bad it really is and what a shame we have right here in America -- one that nobody talks about and one that shouldn't be happening, because everyone else thinks it's damn funny.

Here's what I wrote last month.

We'll help fix Kentucky. We've already gone a long ways into NC and VA. WV is just a matter of time now. TN is going to be hard because of all the corporatist nonsense and jeezodollars that have gone into there. If we can educate our fellow Democrats on the outside as to what the problems are and get them to stop snickering long enough, the mountains will be blue again. They once were and can be again.
