Zimbabwe threatens to kill 64 suspects


JOHANNESBURG The Zimbabwean authorities threatened Wednesday to execute 64 foreigners from five African countries whose plane was seized Sunday at Harare's airport. The officials said the men were mercenaries on their way to Equatorial Guinea on the West African coast to sow conflict.

The president of Equatorial Guinea, a tiny county whose recent oil discoveries have made it one of the continent's biggest oil producers, said the group was part of a quest by "enemy powers" to overthrow his government. President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo said countries and multinational companies hostile to his 23-year rule had conspired to install a politician now living in exile in Spain in his place.

Obiang seized power from his uncle in 1979 and has been wooed by Nigeria and Western oil companies since his country started pumping crude oil.

Human rights groups have criticized his record, saying opposition politicians have been locked up and tortured.
