And the Republicans went apeshit
Edited on Wed Sep-17-08 07:34 AM by BR_Parkway
Can someone remind me again how much universal healthcare for everyone was? And the Republicans went apeshit.

Can someone remind me again how much a nutritious lunch/breakfast for school children was? And the Republicans went apeshit.

Can someone remind me again how much early childhood education programs for everyone was? And the Republicans went apeshit.

Can someone remind me again how much low income housing programs were? And the Republicans went apeshit.

Can someone remind me again how much funding SCHIPS needs to work? And the Republicans went apeshit.

Can someone remind me again how much Amtrak needs to get out of years of neglect? And the Republicans went apeshit.

Can someone remind me again how much active duty pay raises and real veteran's benefits and healthcare were? And the Republicans went apeshit.

Maybe, my fondest hope - is that the half of the country who routinely fucks themselves and the rest of us over because they're too stupidly blinding by the ideology of Big Business to vote for their own interests will finally wake up and realize they've been lied to all along.

3. Why do you hate America?
Asking such questions are proof that you do not support the troops.

(I totally agree with you. What was once just out of question due to cost is now a necessity. Funny how things change.)

5. I think RFK Jr. said it best
Republicans believe in socialism for the rich and capitalism for the poor.
It seems the events on Wall Street prove him correct.

13. I wish, but it increasingly feels like forhead meeting brick walls....
especially when you talk to Joe Average and almost half of them still sound like FAUX news is being transmitted into their brain and vocal cords.

9. I can tell you about health cover
In the process of arguing with right-wingers, I've actually worked this out several times and in several ways.

Year-to-year running costs (discounting set-up costs) using NHS model: Aprox. $600 billion.
Year-to-year running costs (discounting set-up costs) using French model: Aprox. $900 billion (French are generally accepted to have best health system in world).

Amount spent on private healthcare by Americans annually: Aprox. $2.3 trillion.
Medicare cost for year 2002/03: Aprox. $257 billion
Medicaid annual budget: Aprox. $295 billion
Admin costs of NHS: Aprox 6% of budget (including benefits and pensions).
Admin costs of private insurance: Varies but commonly 20-30% of budget.

Now, $600 billion seems like a lot but firstly, it's less that the USA's annual military budget (aprox. $610 billion, not counting either war or the undisclosed intelligence budget) and more importantly, it's still a lot less than the aprox. $2.85 trillion spent by Americans on the combination of Medicare, Medicaid and private insurance. Those three combined still leave millions uninsured.

So national healthcare, even allowing for start-up costs, would be cheaper and covers absolutely everyone. Yes, there are problems with the existing systems but since the US is coming to this late, there's nothing to stop you from setting up a commission to study the existing programs and mix-and-matching parts until you come up with something worthwhile.

15. this is a brilliant point (aka line of attack)
AIG bailout is $85 billion.

SCHIP, which was FOR CHILDRENS HEALTH CARE, was an additional $50-100 billion, but spread out over the next decade or so.

PS - Bernanke has authority to loan out to $800 Billion. Think about that fiscally conservative conservatives....
