Kerry offers hope

American presidential elections are definitely not won in March. But what is now clear is that John Forbes Kerry will be the Democratic Party's standard-bearer. This is significant because he is likely to mount a serious challenge for the White House on November 2. Part of the reason is that Americans are, somewhat belatedly, realising that George W Bush is not going to bring them either peace or prosperity.

A former Bush devotee stated this week: "I'm definitely going to jump ship. Bush is quick to draw the gun but hasn't a clue how to make the peace. I would vote for anybody else. I would even vote for Donald Duck."


But now he can go beyond a Disney caricature. Kerry is being taken seriously. The Massachusetts senator - a Vietnam War hero - is clearly a man who favours multilateralism, and that should appeal to a world that is hugely resistant to Bush's gung-ho tactics.

Kerry has promised that if he wins the election, "I will go back to the United Nations and we will rejoin the community of nations". That would be a good thing. Now all he has to do is prove that he can become the first northern Democrat since John Fitzgerald Kennedy in 1960 to win the presidency. And he carries a lot of people's hopes with him.
