I am interested in your feedback before I send in this oped:
Cognitive psychology is widely used by mental health professionals to alter inaccurate thoughts and beliefs in order to increase health and functioning. In recent years it has also been used for more devious purposes on large masses of people. Politicians have harnessed its power in order to promote misconceptions for political gain and I fear the public may not be entirely aware. Case in point, what happens if a new voice comes out of the wood work and inspires and invigorates our democracy? What is the opposition to do? The answer has been recently to paint him as a celebrity, as someone is all glitter and no substance. Democrats in the past have been content to simply list the facts to refute these smears but again our paragraphs can not compete with the convenience and adherence of labels. I prefer the paragraphs myself but since it hasn’t worked out, here is my reframe of the celebrity tag.
John McCain is boring. He is boring because he has largely abandoned his calls for reform in order to parrot the current president and firm up his political base. Politicians who sell out so completely are so common place that the public almost views it as a requirement for office. Like our current President, McCain can package his plans as tough and full of resolution but that is a poor excuse for a lack of humility and insight into what works and what doesn’t.
Compared to the interest and passion Obama has earned through his smart and well articulated ideas, McCain’s only hope is negative attacks and deception. The problem for America is that Mark Twain may have been right; a lie truly can travel around the world before the truth slumbers out of bed.
