One in Five Self-Proclaimed Athiests Express Faith in Higher Power

By Jacqueline L. Salmon
Washington Post Staff Writer
Monday, June 23, 2008; 12:00 PM

More than 90 percent of Americans -- including one in five people who say they are atheists -- believe in God or a universal power, and more than half pray at least once a day, according to results of a poll released today that takes an in-depth look at Americans' religious beliefs.

......

Two-thirds of Jews, Muslims, Hindus and Buddhists are Democrats or lean Democratic, compared with 22 percent of Mormons. Also, 77 percent of historically black churches are Democrats or lean Democratic, while only one-third of evangelical churches are Democrats or lean Democraic.

sounds like made up numbers.

do the 20% of atheists not know what atheism means?

sounds like they are counting a lot of people who are "spiritual, but not religious"

7. I read the full story last night
and it seems that people who checked "atheist" also checked church/temple♦♠ attendance and a belief in a deity.

So they're counting the "too stupid to live" who randomly check boxes they don't understand as believers instead of atheists, at the very least.

Also, they didn't differentiate between "Yes! How could you think otherwise?" believers and the "Yeah, I guess so" believers.

However, this godless Buddhist realizes why Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims and Jews all lean heavily Democratic. Nobody in these groups has the credulity or ego it takes to believe in a personal deity/ies. The concept of god for Muslims and most Jews especially is a very impersonal one.

8. maybe Buddhists (self included) are counted as religious atheists?

or perhaps all those Hindus are throwing off the average number of Gods believed in?

10. It also could mean
there are people who go to church who don't believe in God, but go there for some other reason. They like to sing, or play an instrument. They want to expose their children to religon. Or they like the moral lessons that can be applicable to everyone whether they believe in God or not.

And It is always nice and cool in there during the summer, warm in the winter, and they have snacks.

5. More than 90 percent of Americans...
...never grew out of the grade school fairy tales they learned as children.
Too bad, really. We had such great potential as a nation, and we're letting it all slip away.
As Robert Heinlein was so fond of writing about, these are "The Crazy Years."
