All About Eve
MAUREEN DOWD
Published: May 25, 2008

WASHINGTON - Maybe it was the proximity of Mount Rushmore and Deadwood, but something caused Hillary’s inner Eve Harrington to leap out in South Dakota.

Venturing into Daschle-Obama territory, she inadvertently and inelegantly illuminated her thinking on why she wants to keep running as long as she can: stuff happens.

In politics, there are many unpredictable and unsavory twists and turns. That’s why she’s hanging around, and that’s why she and Bill want to force Barack Obama to take her as his vice president, even if he doesn’t want her, even if Michelle can’t stand her, even if she has to stir the sexist pot, and even if she tarnishes his silvery change message.

In an interview with The Argus Leader in Sioux Falls, Hillary disagreed that she’s hurting party unity: “My husband did not wrap up the nomination in 1992 until he won the California primary somewhere in the middle of June, right? We all remember Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in June in California.”

6. Funny thing...
If you are a big fan of "All About Eve" you know that Dowd's reference to the movie only works on the most superficial level. First of all, everyone gets pretty much what they wanted by the end of the movie. Eve becomes an award-winning actress. Addison DeWitt finds a worthy object (Eve) for his manipulation and sexual coercion. Lloyd the playwright gets a much-younger actress (rather than the middle-aged Margo) that he wanted in his play in the first place. Margo and Bill the director finally decide to get married, and maybe have kids. And Karen, who initially seems the most innocent of the group but turns out to be a petty manipulator as well, gets her husband, Lloyd the playwright, back from the seductive Eve -- but only because DeWitt is not willing to share.

As Addison DeWitt points out: we're all improbable people.

Anybody notice that Dowd didn't point out that the Miss America who had to step down over nude photos was the first-ever black Miss America? I wonder if Dowd just didn't catch that or decided not to bring that up.

3. She's a ghoul--and even if she won the nom by default in some sort of
terrible event, I wouldn't cast a vote for her. Ever.

4. I'm usually one to give Hillary the benefit of the doubt...
but her statement was tasteless, careless and thoughtless. Granted, the media is going apeshit, as usual, but even I'm a bit stunned that something like this would fall from her mouth. She could have merely said, "Look, I'd be a fool to drop out when the race is so close." That's it. One can't help but wonder why she chose to invoke something as unspeakably ugly and painful as RFK's assasination instead. It was an incredibly bad choice of words.

5. I had forgotten about the Giuliani thing
It slipped my mind that she got into the senate because Trudy Julie-Annie got cancer and dropped out late in the game. No wonder she wants to wait around and see if something bad happens to Obama. It worked before.
