Pay falling for entry-level IT jobs
Thursday 22nd May 2008

But management-level IT professionals have seen a boost of 20.5 per cent, according to new research.

Entry-level IT workers' wages haven't increased in years, while higher-level tech managers still get big salary increases, research has shown.

According to statistics from the Association of Technology Staffing Companies (ATSCo) and iProfile.org, pay for first-line support staff has held firm at £18,000 over the past five years, while second line support staff have seen an increase of just 0.8 per cent a year.

Managers have seen an increase of 20.5 per cent over that time period, the research showed. Other research released today showed a four per cent increase across the board for all IT workers.

ATSCo suggested the differential between low- and higher-level pay mirrored the way those roles are outsourced - as more entry-level work moves offshore to India and other countries, those jobs become devalued here. And, as the UK specialises in higher value IT work, management jobs become worth more.

"Whilst entry-level IT positions may be moving offshore, sophisticated project management jobs remain firmly rooted on UK soil," said iProfile's chief executive, Rick Bacon.

2. Low pay = bad return on college investment and trouble paying off student loan
If you go for IT at this point, you're none too bright.

3. I find it "funny" when politicians claim we need to "educate" factory workers for IT jobs..*MY* job
is going to India.

Most of the software work done for my company is already being done in India.

I am a college educated professional with over 20 years experience. Yet the politicians claim "job training" and a better educated workforce is what we need - NOT protection against our jobs going to the cheapest labor force. They are hoping that people buy into their BS. They hope folks believe that *only* factory workers are affected.... Just like I stupidly believed Bill Clinton with his "the rising tide will lift all ships" BULLSHIT regarding NAFTA.

I apologize to all those who tried to warn the world. I should have paid closer attention. The "rising tide" is only profits for the corporations...

5. I'm a software developer
and I completely agree with all that you said. If we lose our jobs to India, what exactly are we supposed to "job train" for at that point?

8. They should have trained us to invest
and given us investment loans instead of education loans. That would have been more honest.

7. It's because there are not enough Engineers and Techs to fill the positions ... right?
Isn't that the logic? We need more H1-Bs because there are not enough engineers and the wages are falling. Soon the employers will have to stop issuing paychecks at all. So, call your representatives and insist on more "temporary" H1-B visas.

10. Yeah, that old "shortage" BS.
I know so many in the field that are quite experienced that can't find a damn thing out there.
