I love your tag line BTW.
Let's not give an official DSM-IV diagnosis to ignorance however....
I will give a few examples from recent patient visits:
A man yesterday claimed "the liberals" want to take away his guns. I asked him where he read or heard that and he said "an NRA magazine". I told him I am as liberal as they come and I want my right to protect myself, including my right to possess a gun. His wife told him he is "ignorant". 'nuff said. Although he added "You know he's 1/2 and 1/2, don't you?". Guess who he meant.
A patient 2 weeks ago told me his RW radio station claims Barack Obama is muslim. I asked him if he believes everything he hears on radio and he agreed it MIGHT not be true. I asked him if his christian church is for or against wars with people/countries who never attacaked us, and whether he felt his christian beliefs support war against innocent civilians.
The point is, simply, that ignorance is the bane of democracy, but it IS treatable. I think B Franklin and T Jefferson spoke to this a long time ago. First you have to get the "patient" to accept that they are ignorant however. But ignorance is a condition and not a diagnosis.
Most of my poor rural patients are better informed and more liberal than CW. FYI. And most of them can vote, even in Texas.
