What does George Bush have to grin about?
What was it about the look on President George W. Bush's face while he delivered the State of the Union address Tuesday night? That grin, I thought as I watched the president of all the people. It seemed infuriatingly familiar. But why?

Then it came to me. I've seen grins like that on the faces of men who have just bluffed me out of a big pot at the poker table with nothing in their hands.

Bush may be president of the people, but he is not president by the people. Most Americans who voted in the 2000 election cast their ballots for someone else. He is president because a majority of one on the Supreme Court decided he should be.

No wonder the man's grinning. He has taken that fluke and turned it into a mandate to change America militarily, diplomatically, economically and culturally. The address and the grin with which it was delivered were reminders of all that.

4. What's behind that "grin" ...
I couldn't help but notice it too -- whenever that overgrown frat boy behind the podium took a particularly pointed jab at his detractors, you could see him relish the clever spin created by his speechwriters.

This "grin" -- more like a smirk -- is not really a smile or a touch of personal warmth that a president might share with all the nation; it is the cocky arrogance of a spoled rich kid sharing his satisfaction with those who are in on the joke.

I wonder how many of the more than 500 American families grieving for sons and daughters needlessly sacrificed in Iraq saw the humor in his performance.

6. I think it's an Imperial Grin
The knowledge that the 2004 "election" is already over and that, surprise surprise, Hussein, I mean Musharraf, I mean Ferdindand Marcos, I mean Idi Amin, NONO NO!!!, I mean the Emperor of Amerika, George Bush, has already "won".

7. It's the grin of a fly who has discovered a pitcher plant.
This guy has no idea his tenure is going to end in November.
