Bush: No attorney general if not Mukasey
By LAURIE KELLMAN, The Associated Press

WASHINGTON - President Bush sought to save Michael Mukasey's troubled nomination for attorney general Thursday, defending the retired judge's refusal to say whether he considers waterboarding torture and warning of a leaderless Justice Department if Democrats do not confirm him.

"If the Senate Judiciary Committee were to block Judge Mukasey on these grounds, they would set a new standard for confirmation that could not be met by any responsible nominee for attorney general," Bush said in a speech at the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank.

"That would guarantee that America would have no attorney general during this time of war," the president said.

7. Isn't that the truth....
The Dems will figure out a way to hand Junior everything he wants
on a silver platter. Once again, he'll get his way.

Why can't they just stand up to him?

The REpublicans must really have the goods on some of the Dems.

8. Depends on what is reasonable. What is reasonable to the monkeyfuhrer
is not reasonable to America. It's simple really, just say if waterboarding is torture, or it isn't. And come what may either way, right Smirky? If he says it is, then we DO torture and you DO lie. If he says it isn't, then he belongs in the realm of the delusional. Either way, he doesn't look like a very good candidate, now does he? Doing without one looks pretty good from here.

12. No Attorney General?
The list of AG candidates who wouldn't put Bush in jail immediately must be getting slimmer by the day.

19. So reject this one, then have a press conference every day demanding that
Bush appoint an AG candidate who will uphold the Constitution.

To fail to do that, the Dems should say, would expose our country to danger in a time of war.

Heh.

22. What can't the acting AG do that the AG can do?
I wonder because I would like to know how much power is held by the acting AG.

A vote for Mukasey is a vote for torture. Not only does supporting him exonerate previous acts, but promotes future torture with a slippery slope of new methods.

The GOP should change their name to the GTP: The Grand Torture Party.

24. I'm okay with that.
If you're incapable of understanding that waterboarding is torture, you're not qualified for the position.
