I've been reading a lot of articles lately on what the final 500 days of the Bush administration might entail. Some say that George Bush won’t leave office. That a terrorist attack will occur and Martial Law will be instituted. Elections will be canceled and Iran will be nuked. But frankly I don’t see it. It’s not that any of this isn’t possible. Some of or all of it could occur. It just seems that Mr. Bush doesn’t appear that interested in the presidency anymore.
Most of his buddies have moved on. Karl, Fredo, Rummy, Andy, Tony, Harriet and Scooter are gone or going soon. When Karl Rove announced he was leaving George appeared envious. Remember Mr. Bush always said that it’s a hard job to be president and he appears tired. It seems like he is running out the string and recent events seem to agree with this theory.
The photo ops and the selling of the latest good news propaganda from Iraq (Petraeus Report) are continuing like clockwork to provide political cover for the next 100 Billion dollars that Congress is going to pump into a hole in the desert and a farcical modest troop draw down (4000 or so by April next year) so the republican candidates for president can feel comfortable continuing the Iraq war. The confidence game of staying in Iraq and leaving this mess for the next administration continues. But George doesn’t appear to have his heart in it. George was telling a biographer that he is playing to October/November in Iraq and he is looking forward to cashing in on the lecture circuit like Bill Clinton once he leaves office. Does this sound like a president still engaged or is this someone that believes he has accomplished more than his Daddy as president (was elected for two terms and killed Sadam Hussein) and is satisfied to walk away.
Some pundits warn that Dick Cheney is still around and is still his old sneering self and this may prove the difference. The in competency and bull headedness of the administration still exists and disaster can strike at any time. But I just think that George’s heart just isn’t in it. He must know that he doesn’t exactly have a mandate from the American people. Polls show that most can’t wait for his administration to end and I think George agrees with them.
