1. Anyone surprised? Payrolls Post First Decline In 4 Years
By Glenn Somerville

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Payrolls shrank in August for the first time in four years, the government reported on Friday, prompting calls for the Federal Reserve to lower interest rates before credit market turmoil drags the economy into recession.

The unexpectedly bleak report from the Labor Department showing a 4,000 drop in non-farm jobs shocked financial markets, driving down stock prices and the dollar's value.

"It's dreadful," said Michael Metz, chief investment strategist for Oppenheimer & Co. "It shows the so-called support for the economy from rising employment is rapidly eroding and to me it seems almost inevitable we are heading for recession."

2. Do you know what last couple yrs #s were?
It would be nice to compare over the yrs, see if they have dropped or what. I have a cynical mind and have read 1984 too many times.

3. good question
I have heard periodically that they were falling short of goal. Of course, when you set monthly goals, you can adjust them to reflect what you know to be reality, and thus say you were successful when you meet them.

I expect the historical data month-by-month is out there; I'll take a look later today

"DoD Announces Recruiting and Retention Numbers for 2005"

and replace the "2005" with whatever year you want. You'll get a bunch of these monthly releases.

this one has a recap of FY 2004:
http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/library/news/2005/10/mil-051011-dod01.htm

Fiscal Year-to-date Summary

Fiscal 2005 Active Duty Enlisted Recruiting from Oct. 1, 2004-Sept. 30, 2005

.................Accessions...Goal.....Percent
Army.................73,373...80,000.....92
Navy.................37,703...37,635....100
Marine Corps.........32,961...32,917....100
Air Force.............9,222...18,900....102
Total...............163,259...169,452....96

so for that period the Army's goal was 6667/month, and they missed it.

now they are seeking 9600/month and beating it
