'Earth worship' a cheap phrase in a serious matter
From the Moultrie Observer

'Earth worship' a cheap phrase in a serious matter

On Sunday’s opinion page in this newspaper, syndicated columnist Cal Thomas implied that those who think global warming is real are buying into “earth worship.”

Earth worship is a coined phrase used by those who pooh pooh the idea that global warming is happening or that if it is, God will fix it without man’s help.

snip

Now just a parting comment on that thing “earth worship.” While the phrase appears rather gimmickry in the context of which it is applied, let us remind some of those who use it while implying that this whole thing is totally God’s job, that there’s a concept of “earth stewardship” themed in the Judaeo-Christian faiths.

Many of us who grew up on farms had a respect for the land amplified with connotations and heavy overtones of protecting it and improving it. We did not perceive that God would pull up our terraces, plant grass waterways, impound water from severe runoff and insure the quality of our topsoil while we sat on the front porch and sang hymns.

I love the last two paragraphs. What an excellent point to make to the "God will take care of it" croud.

1. A rhetorical strategy....
The earth worship, 'Darwinism is a religion' meme is an attempt by the fundies to rhetorically place rational scientific evidence and method on the same footing as their own irrational superstitious mumbo-jumbo. They don't want to admit that their beliefs are evidence-free convictions while those on the other side are empirically supported conclusion - They want to believe this is a clash of equally valid world views and not the forces of reason against the witch doctors.

2. Those crazy earth worshippers.
When will they get their head out of the clouds and start worshipping my white beared lightening hurling jewish war god of thunder who lives in the heaven???
:sarcasm:

Seriously, I repect faith but these guys are the last ones to be accusing the scientific community of thinking errors associated with worship. But regarding those last two paragraphs, YES! Note this if you want to argue with conservatve Christians about global warming as I have, they WILL accept that last argument, and take it seriously.
