No, Mr. President: The Iraq War Is Not the American Revolution

<snip>

President Bush may glowingly cite the American War for Independence and the Founding Fathers when he trumpets his Iraq policy, but the truth of the matter is that his Iraq policy runs totally contrary to the intent of the Founders when they fought the War for Independence and later drafted the Constitution.

Bush is not upholding American independence by launching an offensive war against a foreign nation. He is not defending our freedom by sending our troops abroad to put in place and then prop up an increasingly radical Islamic regime in the midst of a civil war. He is not even helping the victims of the civil war by doing that.

The Founding Fathers recognized the follies of interjecting ourselves into foreign quarrels and warned against it. “It is our true policy to steer clear of permanent alliances with any portion of the foreign world,” George Washington wisely counseled in his Farewell Address to the nation.

4. Actually, what Bush has done would have been equivalent to England
coming in with an entire fleet and army, with the purpose of burning down strategic towns and hunting down and killing the leaders of the Revolution, in order to set up sock people that would be more agreeable to England's rule.

5. The Birchers *sigh* Who could ever forget their "plan" for Vietnam?
To summarize, it was: We should teach the communists a lesson by immediately bombing Vietnam into a heap of smouldering rubble, and then we should celebrate our victory and leave

The Birchers belong to that far-right segment that uses the words "Communist" and "Socialist" as synonyms for for any sort of exploitation or dictatorship: Nixon was "a communist"; corporations grab for power because they are "communists"; &c&c

6. John Birch Society (Sourcewatch)
... JBS advocates the abolition of income tax, and the repeal of civil rights legislation, which it sees as being Communist in inspiration ... One of the first public activities of the JBS was a "Get US out of UN!" campaign ... Republican mainstream unhappiness with the Birchers intensified after Welch circulated a letter calling President Dwight D. Eisenhower a "conscious, dedicated agent of the Communist Conspiracy" ... http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=John_Birch_Society
