"Let's not fall for Charlie Hustle's latest hustle"

"Rose's confession turns me back to a man who embodied the grace and integrity that Rose so recklessly abandoned: Bart Giamatti, scholar, president of Yale and the National League, seventh baseball commissioner.

Giamatti was a poet with his feet on the ground. He loved this silly game and understood its grip on the American imagination. He thought baseball must be bulletproof from betting, which nearly ruined the game in 1919 when the Chicago White Sox were accused of throwing the World Series to the Cincinnati Reds.

...

And for the next 14 years, Rose waged war against Giamatti and John Dowd, the Washington attorney who built the case against Rose. Dowd's 225-page report detailed 412 instances in the first three months of the 1987 season in which Rose, then manager of the Reds, bet on baseball -- including 52 games when he bet on the Reds.

Now the vapid, self-centered Rose is clearing away the last perceived roadblock to his redemption. Before we carry him on shoulders into the Hall of Fame, let's remember a few things."

1. Tell half the truth in a book and make money, that is what he is doing.

2. I'm sick of Rose....
I've been listening to his whining and denials for years, not only from him, but others who have jumped to his defense (which I might think could be called “Defining Deviancy Down”). Now, he comes out and admits that MLB was right all along. Give us a break!

He’s the first baseball player I ever heard of that charged a kid for an autograph. He’ll do anything for a buck, and his guilty admission is only to sell his new book.

Pete, just go away! The Hall of Fame will get around to you as soon as it gets through with Shoeless Joe Jackson. Should be any day now..

Another good article on this is Tom Boswell’s column in the Washington Post today. He makes a better argument that I do.

3. Charlie Hustle
Pete in no way hurt anyone except himself, the baseball hall of fame is about a mans performance on the field of play not his character,if character is a requirement lets remove Ty Cobb, and all the racist owners, all the adulterers, the pot heads, the drunkards,if you remove all of the those people, who would be in the hall? Sandy Koufax,Jackie Robinson,Bill Veech,Branch Rickey,Roberto Clementa and maybe a few more I forgot, so get over it and place Pete where he belong alongside the rest of the less than perfect baseball players and owners.

4. Yes, he did.
Gambling hurts the integrity of pro sports. It's the cardinal rule. Players and coaches don't gamble. Pete knows it. He hurt baseball in the worst possible way, and then he continued to do so by being dishonest for years.
