Playing 'Survivor' in Washington
Playing 'Survivor' in Washington
By Mark Leibovich Published: May 5, 2007

WASHINGTON: IN recent weeks, Beltway wise guys have amused themselves with a distinctively local version of the TV show "Survivor," pitting Attorney General Alberto Gonzales against Paul Wolfowitz, the World Bank chief. Who will be first banished from the swamp?

Will it be Wolfowitz, the embattled former deputy defense secretary, over allegations of favored treatment to his girlfriend, a former World Bank official?

Or Gonzales, the embattled attorney general who has been bludgeoned over his role in the dismissal of eight United States attorneys?

Regardless, a pervasive belief has taken hold that both are, in the tender parlance of politics, road kill. "By the way, Alberto Gonzales is still attorney general," was how NBC's online political tip sheet, First Read, began a Wednesday report on Gonzales. And you know you're on the outs when you're reduced to saying, as Wolfowitz did, "I urge the committee to reject the allegation that I lack credibility."

We've seen this runup to the inevitable before, of course. It is the entrenched cycle of revelation, outcry, serial apology, and erosion of support that precedes the funeral. It may be just a matter of time before Wolfowitz and Gonzales recognize the "distractions" they have become and decide to spend more time with their families.
