Joan Baez banned at Walter Reed hospital Wed May 2, 9:26 AM ET

WASHINGTON - Folk singer and anti-war activist Joan Baez says she doesn't know why she was not allowed to perform for recovering soldiers recently at Walter Reed Army Medical Center as she planned.

In a letter to The Washington Post published Wednesday, she said rocker John Mellencamp had asked her to perform with him last Friday and that she accepted his invitation.

"I have always been an advocate for nonviolence and I have stood as firmly against the Iraq war as I did the Vietnam War 40 years ago," she wrote. "I realize now that I might have contributed to a better welcome home for those soldiers fresh from Vietnam. Maybe that's why I didn't hesitate to accept the invitation to sing for those returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. In the end, four days before the concert, I was not 'approved' by the Army to take part. Strange irony."

Baez, 66, told the Post

1. I'm somewhat confused
John Mellencamp kicks bush's ass as much as anyone and he was "allowed" to play? Joan Baez has the audacity to promote peace, what a fucking monster. Maybe the Army can get ted nugent not to bathe for a montha and shit his pants and entertain the troops.

2. Probably
They probably don't know who John Mellencamp is. His last name is kind of long and has more than one syllable. ...and Joan has a history...

5. Mellencamp did fundraiser concerts for John Kerry for President
Maybe the Army could not find an "antiwar" angle to censor him with, though.

9. I think Mellencamp
is quite the gentleman and an incredible musical talent anfd family man, but he is also a citizen of this country and he sure the hell can get his dander up by intellectually thinking about conservative garbage. And he's a patriot to boot, whodathunkit?

10. I have a high opinion of Mellencamp
I did see him almost get booed off the stage once back around 1980 when he was calling himself John Cougar, but it wasn't really because he didn't sound good, it was because he was opening for the Kinks and we all wanted to see them!

11. I heard an interview with Mellencamp
and he said the record company called him Cougar and he didn't even know it until he saw the album cover. I think I would have rather seen the Kinks too in 1980, but John has done some damn fine work since then.

8. Who'd they replace her with?
Toby Keith?

Reba McIntire?

Lee Greenwood?

One of them, or some other Bushco asskisser, prolly.

(Mellenkamp should have invited The Nightwatchman, Army prolly don't know about him... that would have been good.)
