Can anyone really stop Bush's flawed war plan?/ Capitol Hill Blue
Can anyone really stop Bush's flawed war plan?
January 7, 2007 8:11 AM

President George W. Bush's ill-advised "surge and accelerate" plan for Iraq lacks any real public or political support before the President even announces it but it doesn't really matter if he has support of not. If Bush wants to escalate the war, he has the power to do it.

<snip>

But while members of Congress overwhelmingly oppose Bush's plan, there really isn't much they can do about it.

As newly-elected Kansas Democratic Congresswoman Nancy Boyda told ABC News last week: Bush "is the commander in chief, Charlie. We don't get that choice. Congress doesn't make that decision."

Short of cutting off funding for the Iraq war effort, there isn't really much Congress can do if Bush decided to send in more troops in defiance of public opinion and dwindling political support. Bush exercises what he sees as his unlimited powers as a "wartime President" and, to date, no one has been able to stop him.

2. I don't think they have the power to do it though.
They can cut off funds. They can make it a pr disaster but they cannot from what I understand, compel him to do so.

6. Bush has implemented a Federalist interpretation of the Constitution
Edited on Sun Jan-07-07 06:39 PM by Tellurian
This was done beginning with the Patriot's Act (stripping citizens of their rights) while adding extraordinary power to the Executive Branch. You have to think of the (privatized)US government as the largest corporation in the World, with Bush serving as the CEO and (citizens) as employees/shareholders. (We all pay Taxes..and the government uses our money to run the country.) And Congress as the (US Inc) board of directors.

To make any changes to the Federalist Constitution, Congress, by a majority/unanimous vote would be the only way to change the nuances Bush has created for himself, that is giving himself dictatorial powers....then, there would have to be enough of a Congressional majority to over-ride his Veto Power!

I don't think Republicans would be willing to go along, depleting Bush's power, by doing the right thing, and
ENDING the War in Iraq.

At least, this is the way I see it... and why it will make it very difficult for us to change the way things are for now.

3. A sobering post for the DU. It was needed.
--- I doubt rather seriously that 60% democratic majorities in both houses of Congress could do much to waylay the Bush march to the wider Mideast War he was hired (by Big Oil & Finance) to create. That would be 261 congressmen and 60 senators. But the democratic party is simply not committed to dealing with our home-bred, neocon nazis in the manner they were dealt with at Nuremburg. Unfortunately, nothing less than that will save this republic,... and I'm no longer so sure that it even deserves to be saved.

5. They can rescind the Iraq resolution that he operates under instead of the war declaration.
With no authority to wage war he will have to get the troops home in 60 days.
