Bill Gates on the Estate Tax
Edited on Tue Jan-02-07 01:18 PM by Pigwidgeon
Having misidentified the Bill Gates in question, I am withdrawing this post before a complete dogpile ensues.

My apologies.

1. You realize that the Bill Gates who wrote
this article is the Microsoft Gates' father, right? And he has long been a staunch defender of the estate tax, along with Mr. Collins.

2. I doubt it. A lot of people give little Billy Jr. more credit for being
a decent guy than he deserves. Frequently.

5. Nope -- I thought it was "The Bill" himself.
All it said was "Bill Gates Sr. is co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation." I've never heard or read about Senior. Long ago, I heard somewhere that his father had died when Junior was young, but that was obviously wrong, too.

Mea culpa for my error, though it's still an interesting article on its own merits. The estate tax issue tends to get turned into a series of talking points and clichés; Gates' and Collins' article give it more depth than editorials usually do.

Again, my apologies, and my gratitude for the corrections.

3. That's Gates Sr. - who is far more human than his drop-out arrested offspring.
It's snotty little Jr. who'd probably want it appealed. Jr is the same one who converted his wealth to the Euro, made a snide remark about the Dollar, and then a year later hype up how great the US economy is (in short, what's in it for him what he made that remark? Everything he does is for him, period. His company's history is replete with such acts. Especially when he offshores jobs to countries with piracy rates that makes America look like a glass of spilt milk by comparison, Gates lost his credibility regarding antipiracy a long time ago.)

(yeah, he looks real concerned and it's a shame those details 'got lost over time'. Note that anybody else getting a mugshot usually has a shithell time trying to get a job...)

He still smirks all the time to this day. I can't entirely blame him.

4. Bill Gates (Jr) became a born again philanthropist during the
law suit over his monopolistic business practices. His attorneys approached him and pointed out that he was the richest man in the US and didn't have any charitable contributions and any jury would see him as s tight fisted Mr Scrooge. Suddenly, overnight, the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation was formed.

I hope he has since come to realize the good his money is doing and to find it personally gratifying but at the outset it was PR decision.

7. Wrong BG.
Junior went Bush bigtime last election. So did his CEO Balmer. For them it was 'just bidness'.
