There's no question that if for some reason Johnson can't finish his term, the political implications are incredible. A Republican appointment by Gov. Mike Rounds for Democrat Johnson would shift the balance of power in the U.S. Senate.

But such talk is premature. For now, let's put politics on the back burner. For now, let's think only of Johnson and his family during this trial.

This South Dakota boy - a fourth-generation South Dakotan - has served us all diligently, if quietly, working especially hard for veterans, water projects and joining with the rest of our congressional delegation to preserve Ellsworth Air Force Base.

Let's be honest. Johnson is a Democrat in a Republican state. He has his detractors.

But surely - especially - during the Christmas season we can bury the politics and think of Johnson and his family.
