Concerns over voter suppression in Arizona

On the eve of the mid-term elections there are serious concerns about the integrity of the voting system and the use of voter suppression techniques.

By Doug Cunningham

As organized labor finishes strong in its voter mobilization for Tuesday there are concerns about the security and accuracy of electronic voting machines and plans are in place to counter voter suppression efforts. Arizona AFL-CIO President Rebekah Friend says this is the first major election there where Proposition 200 is in full force. It’s aimed at preventing undocumented immigrants from voting, but Friend says it’s sometimes complicated I.D. requirements could discourage and even prevent others from exercising their rights to vote.

: “We have a huge retiree population in Arizona. And based on what you have to present, it could be problematic for them also.”

With A Republican Secretary of State in charge o f the election and Diebold machines being used, Friend says there will be problems.

: “So we’re expecting a rather difficult voting process. We do have several national groups in looking at our progress. Some are filming it. We have several watch groups. But we do expect that there will be problems at the polls.”

2. I attended the poll worker training today...
I knew Prop 200 went into effect since last time I worked the polls. However, I didn't realize the full impact.

If the address on the signature sheet doesn't match the address on your identification (e.g. drivers license), then you have to vote a provisional ballot. In Arizona your drivers license is good for something like 25 years. You are not required to change it when you move. Therefore, I am thinking a ton of people won't have their most current address on their ID.

We were told we are to keep track of how many people get pissed and leave in a huff.
