They made it all sound so analytical with an oil expert from the Economist magazine seriously debunking the notion that politicians could control the price of gasoline.

I swear NPR is better propaganda than Faux or the Corporate News Network. The better question that remains unasked is if the oil industry has enough clout to control the government. It sure seems like most of this misadministration is hooked up with some energy related company and keeping this regime in power would seem important to these industries record breaking profits. Lose a few billion to make a trillion down the road.

5. 1.79 in some states
that's my guess... I bet it'll be 2 in FL, NY & CA, and under 1.80 (unless something bad happens) in Ohio, Missouri, Iowa.

7. If you phrase it like they did...
Edited on Wed Sep-27-06 11:33 PM by LostInAnomie
... you make all those who believe in a political connection look like conspiracy nuts. If you phrase the question like "Do you believe that oil corporations are lowering the price of gas during an election year in order to help Republicans and preserve their tax breaks?" it sounds way to plausible.

8. Here are the dots
Edited on Thu Sep-28-06 07:10 AM by GliderGuider
The Goldman Sachs Commodity Index includes gasoline futures as one of its elements. On July 12 Goldman Sachs tweaked the composition of the GSCI. Prior to the revision of the index in July, unleaded gas accounted for 8.45% of the GSCI. Now unleaded gas is only 2.30%. What this means is that hedge funds and institutional money that track the index were FORCED TO SELL 75% of their gasoline futures to conform with the reconstituted GSCI.

You think that kind of selling might have affected the price?

And of course the kicker is that Treasury Secretary Henry M. Paulson Jr. is the former Goldman Sachs chairman. What a fortuitous coinkydink!

It's insidious. I quit listening several years ago after hearing what was without question blatant propaganda re: the so called "Patriot" act.
