"In the Belly of the Green Bird"
by Nir Rosen. A must-read.

Not the best-organized book I've ever read, but that's an important part of studying about the Middle East.... it's lack of organization!

Rosen travels through Iraq looking enough like them and speaking enough like them to fit in... more or less.

He describes the factions... not just the Sunni and Shiia... but the 7ers and the 12ers and all the other little splinter factions that make Iraq such a clusterfuck.

Too bad the neocons didn't read Rosen before they started this.
