Appeasement Driven By Oil
The Bush Administration is now in the habit of hurling the charge of appeasement at critics of its
Iraq war. Anyone who has followed the President's stance toward Sudan will appreciate the deep
irony.

(snip)

Here, in short, is a totalitarian regime with significant parallels to Nazi Germany, even if hardly
on the same economic or military scale. It is also a regime arguably more murderous than that of
Saddam Hussein, with a more expansionist agenda; a rogue state that has sponsored terrorism in the
past and threatens to launch a jihad if the UN intervenes in Darfur. Earlier this year Osama bin
Laden issued a world-wide call for terrorists to go to the aid of Khartoum. Sudan has bona fide -
not fabricated - ties to al-Qaeda. Khartoum is, in other words, everything Mr Bush could wish for
in an "Islamo-fascist" enemy.

This rather long article by David Morse is worth spending a bit of time studying - he has assembled a
lot of facts and put them together in a way that somebody like me, with no particular knowledge of
the region and its politics, can follow and understand.

The culpability not only of the Bush Administration, but of Britain and Europe in this still-
unfolding horror is very clear. How tragic that because the media tend to focus on single issues
we've all been sidetracked by Iraq, by Palestine, and by Lebanon, a situation that would appear
to suit Osame bin Laden down to the ground.
