Fidel Castro fades out. Tropical Taliban next? (Reuters)
Edited on Sun Sep-17-06 09:36 PM by Up2Late
(Please don't shoot the messenger on this one, I think it is good that Reuters is reporting this new label/talking point that the RW is about to start polluting the debate with; this outrageous new term "Tropical Taliban," sound like something hot out of the Karl Rove turd pot.)

Fidel Castro fades out. Tropical Taliban next?

Sun Sep 17, 2006 05:12 PM ET

By Bernd Debusmann, Special Correspondent

HAVANA (Reuters) - No matter whether Fidel Castro returns to office or not, diplomats and dissidents say the post-Fidel era has already begun and some foresee an ideological tug of war between "tropical Taliban" and proponents of Chinese-style economic reforms.

Castro, 80, handed over power to his brother Raul, 75, on July 31 after undergoing emergency surgery for intestinal bleeding blamed on overwork. While officials said the elder Castro was recovering well, he was too ill to make an appearance at a summit of 116 Third World countries in Havana last week.

The Castro brothers hold world records for years in power: Fidel is the world's longest-serving head of government, Raul the longest-serving defense minister -- both 47 years. "It is difficult to envisage Fidel running the country as he used to, and with the same vigor," said a Latin American diplomat. "He is on the way to becoming a symbol and a figurehead."

More than 70 percent of Cuba's 11 million population were born after Fidel Castro seized power in 1959 and tend to be reluctant to talk about a future without him. But a number of dissidents speak out frankly and on the record....

2. The Taliban are about the regulation of women.
This is ridiculous spec hoping to pave the way for a liberation invasion by all those fine non-Taliban who still miss Batista.

3. What happens in Cuba is of no concern to me
We have problems of our own here in America. Must we involve ourselves in every little spat that goes on in the world?

4. "Tropical Taliban"...What a bullshit term.
Sounds like it was designed to justify an invasion.

...I'd like to know more about this guy too. Does he usually trash LW movements in Central/South America or does he usually tell a balanced story?

6. Tropical Taliban is a ludicrous phrase
Castro's socialism and the Taliban couldn't be further apart ideologically if they were invented expressedly for that purpose. I guess the word Taliban is now just a vague term used to denote "enemies of the U.S." (as seen by the right wing, who have scads more in common with the Taliban than Castro does).

8. Reuters is increasingly becoming yet another propaganda outlet,
it seems.

Great for making wise, well-informed business decisions...

9. Please read the article and not just the the Headline.
There is a huge difference between this or any Reuters New report when compared to an AP story (if they even bothered to cover it, I doubt they did).

10. Yes I've read it, Up3Late
(and many other sources too, in both languages).

You're right: At least Reuters is still touching the right bases, although (I say) in a twisted way.

Seems, according to 'Western' MSM, the BIG QUESTION out of the 'WEST' for Cuba is: (¡¡¡HEY, FANTASTIC, FIDEL DEAD!!!, cowboy/girl) Which way would you prefer to get raped?

Consider the options, señoras y señores...
