Elections have hurt Iraq, report finds
"WASHINGTON – Iraq's political process has sharpened the country's sectarian divisions, polarized relations between its ethnic and religious groups, and weakened its sense of national identity, the Government Accountability Office said Monday.

Despite a sharp increase in Sunni-Shiite violence, however, attacks on U.S.-led coalition forces are still the primary source of bloodshed in Iraq, the report found. It was the latest in a series of recent grim assessments of conditions in Iraq.

This was a small article in my local paper. I couldn't find it on their website, but I did find this one article.

1. Small matter of a military invasion inflicting some damage as well.
It is a real red herring to blame sectarian violence on the political process.

I think the bulk of the blame should be awarded to the dolts who disbanded every civil, provincial, and municipal form of government when they invaded the country and destroyed it's infrastructure. Then, after decimating the political infrastructure they help form a coalition government from groups that have been fighting with each other for hundreds of not thousands of years.

It is hard to imagine that anyone involved in politics for longer than 30 seconds would fail to envision this outcome in Iraq. We are left to presume that the failure of the current Iraqi government to keep the peace is a well engineered and expected result.
