AFP: Damage to environment threatens the poor: pope
Damage to environment threatens the poor: pope
Sun Aug 27

ROME (AFP) Pope Benedict XVI warned that damage to the environment had dire consequences for the poor and called for all Christians to work to save the earth.

The world "is exposed to a series of risks created by choices and lifestyles that can degrade it," the leader of the Roman Catholic Church said in his Sunday sermon given at his summer residence of Castel Gandolfo, south of Rome.

"Damage to the environment makes the life of the poor on Earth particularly unbearable," the pope said, calling on all Christians to take care of the earth and not deplete its resources, sharing them in solidarity.

The pontiff's call came a few days before Christian associations celebrate in Italy on September 1 a "day for the safeguarding of Creation"....

1. the catholic church gets millions of $$ from "the poor" - he oughta know
about the poor and dire consequences, all those desperate peasants plunking their pennies and pesos into church coffers in the hopes the church will do something like sell its art collection and use the cash for something...more along the lines of jesus.

2. Well, he needs to address the real problem
When God said, "Go forth. Be fruitful and multiply," I don't think He meant to continue doing so until we destroy ourselves by overpopulation, which is the real issue when viewing the environment. Six point three billion little miracles are really quite enough.

But I don't think this is the Church's view. It might reduce the amount coming into the coffers if the Church advocated birth control.

4. No doubt some people use it for that
And they make me pretty sick. But the Church needs to change its stance on preventing unwanted births and tell women that it is okay to not have children or to reduce the number of children they have.
