Influx of Mexican migrants crippling American culture, says Pat Buchanan
By Harry Mount in New York
(Filed: 22/08/2006)

America is going the way of the Roman Empire and will be extinguished by illegal immigration, Patrick Buchanan, the Right-wing firebrand, writes in a new book.

In State of Emergency - The Third World Invasion and Conquest of America, the provocative Mr Buchanan jabs at one of America's raw nerves - the influx of Latin American immigrants across the Mexican border.

Patrick Buchanan: predicts the death of the West

Latest estimated figures put the number of illegal immigrants at 11 million, compared to 8.5 million in 2000.

The former Republican presidential adviser calls for a deportation programme and a new Berlin Wall along America's Mexican border.

He accuses Republicans and Democrats of being so paralysed by guilt over past racial injustice that they are unable to create an effective immigration programme.

Mr Buchanan is on the Right of the Republican party but is still considered a serious political figure. A presidential candidate in 1992 and 1996, he worked for Presidents Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan.

Mr Buchanan accuses George W Bush of being the president who will lose the south-west to Mexico.

"As Rome passed away, so the West is passing away, from the same causes and in much the same way," Mr Buchanan writes. "What the Danube and Rhine were to Rome, the Rio Grande and Mediterranean are to America and Europe, the frontiers of a civilisation no longer defended. The children born in 2006 will witness in their lifetimes the death of the West."

4. Agreed
As much as I really, really don't like Pat, he isn't wrong on everything and I am glad he is speaking out against *'s screw-ups. He is entitled to his opinion just like everyone else and should feel free to state it. It is up to those that hear it to accept or reject his line of thinking.

2. pat buchanan, the west, as you envision it is only your fantasy of what
the west is...it is actually so much more, so much more generous, so much more accepting, so much more welcoming, so much more rainbow like ... the west as you envision it and as bush is trying to create is a fantasy which should never become a reality. it is good if your fantasy is dying.

3. What makes Pat Buchanan so dangerous is that he's smart.
If he were merely a racist dolt like George Allen, he could be more readily dismissed. But he's a much keener student of history than that, and it makes him dangerous because his bias is backed up by books.

I wonder if he's going to make one final desperate plunge at the White House. He certainly is maintaining a big public profile here lately. And the GOP is exceptionally weak for 08.

5. CripplingOur Culture? Immigrants???
If anyone's crippling our "culture" it's Bush/Cheney by destroying our economy, our government and our nation of laws.

Immigrants are the American culture--immigrants aren't wiping out things, they bring more ideas and traditions and points of view to the mix that made America great.

Oh, you mean the Good Ole Boy culture?? Well, since at least 3/4 of the nation AREN"T Good Ole Boys, I would think that was a case of natural selection: survival of the fittest, if you will. Good Ole Boy culture has nothing to offer us but sweat, blood, tears, and stupidity magnified by misapplied technology. I guess, Bush/Cheney personifies the Good Ole Boy culture.

7. Hmmm....
wonder what this fellow would say if he read some of the anti-Irish diatribes that were in the newspapers in the 1840s? You know, after that Potato Famine, a whole slew of those Irish Catholics came over to the US, crippling the WASP culture of the time....trying to tarnish the purity of what is America. :sarcasm:

9. There is something racist and fear-mongering about this
I sense this will hurt Bill Richardsons chances of becoming president. As someone with foreign policy experience who knows how to balance his state's economy during a recession and could help vear the hispanic vote away from Bush- I feel as if he would be a perfect candidate in many respects.

Now people will freak out "Oh no he is part of La Reconquista" and such juvinile garbage. I doubt those sorts of racist idiots would ever vote for a Democrat anymore anyway, but the Democratic party can be so hyper vigilant about not losing that it shoots itself in the foot sometimes.
