GREAT piece by Garrison Keillor
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/chi-0608160063aug16,1,7998656.column?coll=chi-opinionfront-hed

He really gets it, in a way I'm not sure anyone else does.

The Abramoff stuff is great, and the republicans are called out on their fearmongering.

Can you guess who Rep. Blimp and Sen. Foghorn are? I think I can...

1. Hailtothechimp:
In this forum, the standard is to use the article title as the thread title. Folks usually post a few (no more than six) paragraphs of the article, as well as a link.

Please use these guidelines the next time you post in this forum.

TIA,

4. Thank you, thanks you, thank you. My pet peeve (don't know that it is a
rule) is for somebody to provide a link ONLY - especially to a video. A LOT of people have dial-up because they cannot afford cable - and we can't do videos.

If a link only is provided to an article is also annoying. If I wanted to read a link, I can probably find it myself. :(

2. Excellent column to forward to the GOPers in your email address book.
In the midst of a wonderful celebration of the American enjoyment of a baseball game on a summer's day, Keillor deftly includes one hard-hitting paragraph slamming Bush & the neocons, without ever naming them specifically, except Abramoff. The column is a classic example of how to give constructive criticism.

He starts out with some real feel-good thoughts triggering warm childhood memories. Then he gives some truths about the neocon way. Then he ends up with more feel-good prose about baseball.

I'm forwarding this to a bunch of bull-headed, lifelong Republican males - all of whom love baseball.
It is also heartening that this is published in the Chicago Tribune - stalwart GOP paper that it is.

3. Great BB writers were introduced to the game by women...
Thomas Boswell and Roger Angell went to the games with women.

My grandmother never missed a Pirates game on the radio.

A great column, but - especially when it was a daytime game - baseball meant a lot to women.

7. The Tigers are a great story this year.
Tiger fans have suffered plenty to get to where they are now. I trust that you are enjoying the ride this year.

And don't worry. I'm not posting any links to anything again. If people are going to be such sticklers about it, then nevermind.....

8. Unfortunately, it's an issue of copyright law.
Edited on Thu Aug-17-06 09:44 PM by Uncle Roy
The law says that you can't post copyrighted material on a public forum without first getting permission from the copyright holder. The only exception is for what the copyright law calls "fair use", ie, if you are doing a review or posting to a forum, you can quote some of the article (usually just 4 paragraphs), and you have to give a link to the original.

All public forums (not just DU) have to abide by this or they can get in legal trouble, which can be pretty expensive. So all forums (not just DU) have a "policy" of 4 paragraphs and a link, and they have to enforce it or they will start getting nastygrams from lawyers.

The Mod who spanked you (very gently, I might add) might have given the impression that this was just a DU policy -- some arbitrary local quirk... some Skinnerian brain-cramp -- but unfortunately it's the way the whole world works right now. Google "copyright" and "fair use" and you'll see what I mean.

So, thanks for posting to share the wonderful Keillor article you found (and I agree with you, he is a national treasure) and don't be discouraged from posting in the future to tell us about any other gems you might dig up.

Roy (long-suffering Red Sox fan...)

9. Thanks.
You may have been long-suffering once, but as I like to tell people, the Sox (both Red and White) have scratched their itches recently. As a Cubs fan, I'm beginning to wonder when my time is coming. Or if it will come at all. But that's for another forum, I guess.
