Pgh Post Gazette: What we know / A deadly airline plot and failed Bush pol
http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/06225/712954-192.stm

There is much that we don't know about the plot uncovered last week to blow up 10 airliners over the Atlantic, flying between Great Britain and the United States.

<snip>

Till then, however, there are some things we do know.

We know that the war in Iraq is not a "war on terror."

We know that the loss of 2,600 good Americans, the injuries of 19,000 others and the wartime expense of $320 billion have been a tragic waste.

<snip>

Yes, there is much that we don't know. What we do know, based on the foiled plot against U.S.-bound aircraft, is that five years of policies by George W. Bush and the Republicans who control Congress have made the country no more secure and its people no more safe. It is time for a change.

1. Gives me hope, and pause
I'm glad to see cracks in the dam, so to speak, but also worried about this administration being cornered if the see their power coming to an end.

They have done SO much wrong against us and the world, they have to know they won't get away with it..and thats what scares me the most. I'd like to think that they really are that stupid, or short-sighted, but I just don't know...

6. I think they R cornered and they hesitate a lot between resorting to
their early tricks (the PNAC's dream: their "New Pearl Harbor") because they're not sure where the blame would fall after a second one: on them for showing their incompetence (again... re: Katrina) five years after their first NPH?? If so: they'll lose.

The same with Iran: They have all their stupid PowerPoint slides ready, I'm sure, but they hesitate to go ahead in their sick plan to attack before the elections because "Standard & Poors" warned them this could blow up the price of a barrel of crude up to $250 US!! Imagine the cost of a fill at the pump times 3 or 4 overnight!! The economy would just die right there... So they would be toast there too.

Hence the last card they've got that is becoming more and more transparent is these silly color codes, their prayers, and their voting-machines.

3. I was very pleased
to read this editorial, most especially coming from a Richard Mellon-Scaife rag. And this line, "We know that the war in Iraq is not a "war on terror."" needs to repeated over and over. It may be a big, "duh" for us, but the sheeple out there could still use this affirmation. The pendulum is indeed swinging if the Post-Gazette is printing editorials like this, but the neocons are going to keep spinning and spinning everything they can to keep their grasp of power, and fear and ignorance are their greatest weapons.

Speaking of spin, I listen to a public radio station in the morning which broadcasts the BBC and NPR side-by-side. It's pathetic how frequently I get better coverage of what is happening in my own country from the BBC than I do from NPR, which has steadily gone downhill over the past ten years. Anyhow, in this case, the BBC yesterday provided some very thoughtful analysis of the foiled terrorist plot and the sociological implications of British-born youth who feel so disaffected and alienated from British society, and the backlash of that which has manifested itself into an embrace of Islamic Jihad. Then NPR's Weekend Edition came on. Scott Simon interviewed Juan Williams and his whole line of questioning seemed to be based upon which party can best use this incident for political gain, and how. Disgusting.

4. Not yelling at you but for the umpteenth time not the Scaife Rag
Almost every time I post a Post Gazette article some DU'er identifies it as the Scaife Rag - it's not - that's the other paper the Tribune Review.

I think I will add a disclaimer from now on when I post which paper is and which is not the Scaife rag.
