They ARE getting desperate. Witness this Cal Thomas op-ed:
It was in my paper (Charlotte Observer) earlier this week and I had to restrain myself from hurling violently when I read it.

But now, after this latest "non-incident incident", and the attendent fear-mongering, I think I understand: The neocons are SO DESPERATE to associate Democrats with terrorism that it is LAUGHABLE.

The article, entitled "Taliban Democrats" (Yes you read that correctly).

http://www.townhall.com/columnists/CalThomas/2006/08/10/taliban_democrats

The narrow primary defeat of veteran senator Joe Lieberman in Connecticut's Democratic primary is more than a loss for one man. It is a loss for his party and for the country. It completes the capture of the Democratic Party by its Taliban wing.

They used to be "San Francisco Democrats," a phrase coined by former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Jeane Kirkpatrick to describe the party's 1984 convention. But they have now morphed into Taliban Democrats because they are willing to "kill" one of their own, if he does not conform to the narrow and rigid agenda of the party's kook fringe.

Lieberman's one "sin," in the eyes of the Taliban Democrats, was that he supported the effort to defeat the insurgent-terrorists in Iraq. As a Jew, Lieberman is particularly sensitive to those who have targeted the Jewish people for extinction. But even if he weren't Jewish, he would still "get it," because he understands what's at stake in the region and has correctly concluded that the consequences of American failure in Iraq would be catastrophic.

His detractors, who brought him down in the primary with a one-issue, inexperienced and unqualified candidate, Ned Lamont, hate President Bush so much that their judgment has been distorted. Former Bill Clinton aide Lanny Davis, in a recent column for The Wall Street Journal titled "Liberal McCarthyism," printed a sample of the incendiary rhetoric directed toward Lieberman. There is thinly-veiled anti-Semitism ("As everybody knows, Jews ONLY care about the welfare of other Jews" posted on Daily Kos); irrationality ("Joe Lieberman is a racist and a religious bigot." Daily Kos) and personal attack ("Lieberman cannot escape the religious bond he represents. Hell, his wife's name is Haggadah or Muffeletta or Diaspora or something you eat at Passover." Posted on the Huffington Post blog)....

Now this is the height of hilarity: Thomas is reduced to quoting message board comments as if it's the mainstream thinking of the blogosphere. Complete, utter, ludicrous propaganda. Very funny, if it weren't that most of his readership will eat this shit up like pancakes.

Read the rest of the article if you can stomach it. He repeats the schoolyard phrase "taliban democrats" ad nauseum throughout. But here's the thing: This is the only argument they have left. Their policies are abject failures, so their only option is to link the country's enemies with their political enemies, and hope that the mass American public will buy it. We'll just see how that plays out, with support for the war plummeting daily.

1. i saw that in my local rag today
"Taliban Democrats"

So maybe Cal can remind me which narrowly-interpreted montheistic religion the Democrats are forcing on us, Taliban-style?

Oh wait, that's the other party. :eyes:

4. Cal has been an idiot ever since I read him in the late 1950s.
However, we need to counter this idea because this is what they are going to be saying from here out until 08. Also in my opinion the Clinton's had better clue their aides into what is really happening, if they even know.

8. Cal Thomas should quote comments on DU.
There are no lack of anti-Israel-bordering-on-anti-Semitism comments here, and no lack of insane conspiracy theories either. The London plot has already prompted who knows how many comments on DU to the effect that this is just a political put-on by Blair/Bush. Most laughably, there have been a number of threads to the effect that the timing of this was meant to influence Lamont/Lieberman. (Uh, guys, it was a week too late to influence that race.)

23. No one on DU claimed it
was meant to influence the Lamont/Lieberman primary. That's inaccurate.

There may have been comments bordering on anti-Semitic, I don't know. However, this is an anonymous internet message board open to anyone in the world with a modem. Individual posters do not necessarily represent Democrats or anyone else, they could be anyone from anywhere.

10. How can we be a Taliban?
(a) We don't think that Church and State should be the same,
(b) We don't advocate the suppresion of women's rights,
(c) We hate the death penalty,
(d) Not interested in nonsensical wars,
Any more bullets to add to this?
This has to be slapped right back at their faces.

18. One of the people Cal Thomas quotes was being sarcastic.
Cal Thomas got the quote after Lanny J. Davis took it out-of-context.

In the Wall St. Journal, LANNY J. DAVIS claims
blogs such as "The Daily Kos" are bigoted.
===============================================
http://www.opinionjournal.com/extra/?id=110008763

The far right does not have a monopoly on bigotry and
hatred and sanctimony. Here are just a few examples...

• On "Lieberman vs. Murtha": "as everybody knows, jews
ONLY care about the welfare of other jews; thanks ever
so much for reminding everyone of this most salient
fact, so that we might better ignore all that jewish
propaganda about participating in the
civil rights movement of the 60s and so on" (by
"tomjones," posted on Daily Kos, Dec. 7, 2005).
=============================================

LANNY J. DAVIS is deceiving his readers.

Tomjones is being sarcastic.

It is obvious that tomjones is being sarcastic when
one reads the comment in context:

===========================================================
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2005/12/7/162152/209

Why Should Joe Care (0.97 / 40)
....about a bunch of goyim dying in Iraq?

It's not like anybody he cares about is suffering as a
direct result of the war.

17. The Taliban don't kill their own
it is all one big happy lame propped up club like the GOP has become, replete with convenient fundamentalism, prejudicial "other" bashing and real violence. An inappropriate analogy is the best weapon in their arsenal only because it seeks to confuse the truth.

Projection again. Boldly lying where real liars fear to tread.

I believe the term from psychology that describes this one best is "projection"? You project your shortcomings onto your opponent, right?

21. That he would give
so much credence to left-wing bloggers in influencing a primary election expresses desperation on two fronts: fear of losing power on the Repub side, and also loss of the influence of the MSM. And Lieberman committed far more "sins" than simply his unerring support of the Iraq occupation. Furthermore, the Connecticut primary was probably more about recapturing the center and anti-incumbency than anything else. Get real, Cal.
