How Emotionally Insecure Is Bush?

How Emotionally Insecure Is Bush?
FILE UNDER: Politics, Culture
George Bush didn't look comfortable at his press conference today. He kept getting a nervous smile, he kept making awkward jokes. Like, he told the ballsy David Gregory of NBC that he wouldn't offer him a job at the White House, "you wouldn't pass the background check!" Then when he realized it was inappropriate—no one laughed—Bush said "That was a cheap shot" and promptly withdrew the crack. Right after that he threw his arms in the air as he joked about a reporter's "brilliant" question. More nervousness.

The reporters at the press conference seemed nervous themselves. Like they were pulling punches, afraid to make him seem even more foolish. Last night with Brian Williams on NBC Nightly News, Bush was also awkward. Looking away, never firm, his voice a little quavery and squeaky. Williams was over-polite, as if afraid the guy might crack right there.

The President seems to be losing the one good quality he once had, emotional comfort, manliness. The understanding so many others have had, that he's in over his head, has dawned at last on him. He's like a pitcher who's got the bases loaded and has lost the plate, also his fastball, his curveball and his offspeed pitch. Who's going to pull him? Just remember, when you do—pull Cheney too.

2. Bush's attack on David Gregory was more than inappropriate
The attack was part of an ongoing effort to intimidate David Gregory for insisting that his questions be answered. The effort to intimidate Gregory is a sing of Bush's weakness.

Here is the entire exchange between Bush and Gregory:

Bush: David Gregory Couldn't Pass Background Check
Posted by Greg Sheffield on April 28, 2006 - 15:28.
NBC White House correspondent David Gregory got into a sparring match with President Bush during a press conference today. Asked David Gregory:

"Mr. President, we're seeing some turnover and some change within your administration, and I wonder what it says about what you think is necessary to turn your presidency around at this point?"

The president responded with: "I think it's necessary to continue doing -- to achieving results for the American people. We've got big challenges for this country and I've got a strategy to deal with them."

Bush then cited off a laundry list of current issues to deal with, ending with, "So there's a lot to do today, but we'll continue to be results-oriented."

The president then tried to call on someone else: "Martha Raddatz."

But Gregory spoke up again: "But I asked you about your internal changes and what that says about how you think things need to be changed. They've been very public, your internal changes."

Responded Bush: "Well, David, I'm a results-oriented person, and my job is to achieve things for the American people, positive results that make us more secure and more prosperous. And of course, I will have people by my side that work toward that objective."

Bush then quipped, "Thank you for your penetrating question."

7. What an idiot
Yes, he is insecure. He is also a bully, and uses his position to try to intimidate others. He can never gain respect for his decisions, or his policies, so he instead tries to belittle those who question him. What a pathetic little man he is. What a tragedy that so many lives have been ruined to placate his insecurity.
