Independent thinking-Jesse Jackson seeking break from Dems
Independent thinking

Jesse Jackson is actively seeking to break away from the Democrats in future elections.

Gary Younge

Civil rights leader Jesse Jackson is actively seeking to break away from the Democrats and support an independent candidate in future elections.

"It's time to think about an independent candidacy," he told an editorial meeting at the New York-based Nation. "The present arrangement is not working. State by state we're trying to find out what is the legal requirement to get a candidate on the ballot."

Jackson did not suggest whom he had in mind to take on the challenge but intimated that it might not necessarily be him. "I didn't say I'm going to do it. I'm saying it needs to be done."

Expressing frustration with the Democratic party for being too close to the Republicans and ignoring the views of its base, Jackson asked: "What difference does it make if you have one party with two names ... There's a certain pregnant moment here for reviewing our plan ... We need to build something that has the capacity to become a big movement."...

6. "for the Dems"?
what about for the country?

I'm all for kicking republican ass but I don't do it "for the Dems". I do it
because of what I believe in.

I'm all behind Howard Dean but if he and the rest of us can't oust the corporatist DINO faction and get back to what the party is all about you are going to be seeing more and more people look for alternatives.

8. Been there before
and would go again in a heartbeat if the Dems don't begin to clean up their act and form some real stability with some real power. They have had over 5 years and now it will soon be down to 5 months and very little accomplished to create change!

4. Oh God no!
This is the last thing we need. Surely he knows that. Hopefully this is just a ploy to push the Democrats to pay more attention to minority issues.

10. I think that's probably behind his actions
His son is a Democratic Congressman -- I don't think he'd do anything that would damage the party.

9. I understand his frustration, but

without electoral reform of winner take all, it is a swim upstream. My reason for opposing Nader. we all know civics one. Winner take all. With electoral reform, which is possible at the state level; it is suicide. If they propose refendera which will change things, I will then join them. But so many congressional Democrats are wimps. I do understand. Start with Liebermann. Think with passing of time, Liebermann might be the keynote speaker at some future Repug convention? Like Zell Miller did. At least Liebermann would put the convention to sleep since he has not Miller's nastiness.

11. Another whore
Maybe he should try to learn something about the fiasco he helped create regarding that poor turnip, Terry Schiavo. . .
