What's Wrong With America: The Conservative View
http://blogs.washingtonpost.com/thinktanktown/?referrer=email

"The head of a leading conservative think tank and the chairman of a conservative website have teamed up to write a new book called Getting America Right, which argues that the country is going down the wrong path despite five years of conservative Republican government.

The subtitle describes the contents: The True Conservative Values Our Nation Needs Today. The book is written by Edwin Feulner, president of the Heritage Foundation, and Doug Wilson, chairman of Townhall.com.Promotional material for the book declares, “The era of liberal dominance is finally over, but sometimes you wouldn’t know it.”

The authors tick off the problems they charge the Bush administration has failed to solve: out-of-control government spending, waves of illegal immigrants threatening American security and identity, growing numbers of Americans looking to the federal government for a “quick fix,” the government grabbing more power at the expense of individual liberties, businesses fleeing overseas, and a growing terrorism threat.

Feulner and Wilson declare, “What will rescue us now are the things that have always made this nation great.”The authors list those things as: free enterprise, limited government, individual freedom, traditional American values, a strong national defense, and the rule of law. And what is at risk if America does not return to those six principles? “Nothing less than the freedom, prosperity, and security of ourselves and our children and our grandchildren,” the think tank executive and the website chieftain warn.

A conservative icon, former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, praises the book as "an acute and inspiring analysis." "

How About THE truth: THE COUNTRY IS GOING DOWN THE WRONG PATH BECAUSE OF 5 YEARS OF CONSERVATIVE REPUBLICAN GOVERNMENT!!!!!

1. traditional American values
wonder what that's code for.

Also, whenever you read crap like that it makes you wonder WHY there is never an astute explanation of the statement.

I have a traditional gay family living and practicing traditional American values.

I defy this boob to prove otherwise. "Tradition" is what mindless idiots parrot for to make sure everyone else is just like them. It's what people in Iran use to hang gay teenagers and brothers and fathers in Pakistan use to justify honor killings of their sisters and daughters and wives.

It's not all it's cracked up to be.

2. Limited government, individual freedom???
They make a statement like this and then do every thing they can to use "gubment" to legislate morality (traditional values). The blatant hypocrisy of these morons never ceases to amaze me.

3. Actually, what the are hyping in the book is true Conservatism, not
this hijacked NeoCon, Theocratic crap that is called "conservative" today.

Hopefully this is more of the split between the two very different factions of their party. They claim that their platform has mainstream, popular support - but the Theocrats are liars. They've stolen the leadership of the Conservative party, and only have a fraction of the support that they claim. In fact, they currently count as a large portion of their membership people who actually support the opposite of what this criminal band has been pushing for the past 5 years.

I personally am glad to see it happening.

4. I think their argument is going to be...

...that we don't have a true conservative government now, and that's the problem.

Don't know if it's my cup of tea for light reading, but sounds interesting nonetheless.

5. my take is
we'd be better off than now with a conservative government and better off still with a liberal governemt. Of course, either political philosophy is secondary in my book to effective leadership, competent civil servants and a respect for the Constitution.
