Bush and his legal enablers hold to an extremist interpretation of the “commander-in-chief” clause of the U. S. Constitution that would give him virtually unlimited executive powers in times of war—even a “war on terror,” a metaphorical struggle against an abstract noun which theoretically could go on forever.
"For reasons best left to historians, the Republican right has made itself captive to a brand of callow authoritarianism that’s found its hero in this swaggering mediocrity who appears invariably to draw the wrong lessons from what few scraps of history he knows."
2. It's safe to say that the war on terra will never be declared over
it will go on and on like the so-called war on drugs. I kind of doubt a Democrat in the White House will end it--officially--either, even if such a change of leadership would be permitted. What won't go on and on is your freedom as a citizen and the Constitution's safeguards against the rise of dictatorship. As of now, the only thing we have to protect us against the inexorable rise of Republican Party Fascist Dictatorship is... the Republicans who control Capitol Hill.
