With fewer than 14 shopping days left until Christmas, I'll dispense with the subtle hints and get right to the point. I'm hoping someone will give me a Louis Philippe commode as a gift this year.
Truth be told, I had no idea what a Louis Philippe commode was until shortly after Thanksgiving, when I was channel-surfing and happened upon a big palooka named Randy "Duke" Cunningham blubbering on the TV.
Cunningham, an eight-term Republican congressman from California, was resigning from office after pleading guilty to accepting at least $2.4 million in bribes and evading $1 million in taxes.
"I broke the law, concealed my conduct and disgraced my high office," he said tearfully. "I know that I will forfeit my freedom, my reputation, my worldly possessions and, most importantly, the trust of my family and friends."
Later, I did a little research on the part of the blubbering that interested me most -- the worldly possessions.
The man had some.
